Brothers Coen - advice needed!

RWB (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 17th May 2003, 13:00

I have seen `The Man Who Wasn`t There`, and enjoyed it immensely (it is on my DVD wishlist). I recently purchased `Fargo`, and enjoyed it too, but not as much.

Based on this, and my enthusiam for the Coens, would anyone care to give me pointers on which DVDs of theirs to go for next? Bear in mind, me being an R2 man mainly, I would get the R2 versions of their work.

I watched The Big Lebowski for the first time last night, and it does have some very funny scenes, but it really is a very strange little film. I found that it kind of lost its pace have way through, and towards the end, the DivX I was watching went out of sync (lol!) which seriously affected my enjoyment. Still, its a very good film, and John Goodmans insane `Nam veteran is brilliantly portrayed.

What is "The Man Who Wasn`t There" like?

`The Man Who Wasn`t There` is a very slick and stylish noir, with a wonderful performance from Thornton as the titular character, backed up by Coen-esque characters and an engaging script. The use of B/W is perfect.

I don`t think `TBL` appeals to me much, I was thinking more along the lines of `Barton Fink`, `Miller`s Crossing`, `Raising Arizona` and `Blood Simple`...what are these supposed to be like?

Raising Arizona is great - I haven`t seen any of the others but definitely recommend this one. It`s been a while since I`ve seen it, but I`m sure as you know the film revolves around the stealing of a baby - and the aftermath of this crime.

Also, O Brother Where Art Thou? is good as well - if you haven`t seen it.

`O Brother` doesn`t appeal too much, but I may check out `RA`. Thanks. :)

Blood Simple and Millers Crossing are strange dark thrillers.
Raising Arizona is a dark comedy and Barton Fink is a very dark comedy .
Personally I like all the coen films and their remake of The Ladykillers might turn out to be the first remake of a classic in recent years that isn`t a waste of time.

Millers is great. You should really give O Brother a go, honestly its an excellent film.

The Big Lewbowski is their best film, and one of the funniest ever made, IMHO. You should at least look out for it being on the TV.

O Brother is great as well. I didn`t think I would like it since it`s a musical, but the music is very charming, and hard to dislike. Plus, Clooney is brilliant in it (even if he isn`t singing - which might be a good thing ;-) ).

Raising Arizona is great, funny, touching, weird, Nic Cage is brilliant.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

Richard, you can borrow "Oh Brother" if you fancy - IIRC it`s an R4 copy I have (may well be dual R2). A film I have watched several times and enjoyed a lot - partly because of the soundtrack. Nothing like TMWWT, though.
