Best extended edition

The threads floating around mentioning the extended version of Leon got me thinking - what`s the best extended version of a film on DVD (or generally, what`s the best extended re-release)?

Leon - excellent extension. Really adds a lot to the film and the relationship between the two characters - for me, it started to verge on uncomfortable. Well recommended - if you`re a fan of the film, buy it, even if you already have the R2 version.

Terminator 2 - good extensions. I`m a big fan, so loved all the extended scenes, but I don`t think it harmed the plot too much to have them removed. Nice to have.

Fellowship of the Ring - hardly noticed the extended scenes first time through! Some interesting bits and pieces, but it didn`t make the film any better, really. Again, nice to have.

Aliens - good extensions. Gave more background on the link between Ripley and Newt, and explained why she was so attached to her. Good stuff.

Well, they`re the ones that leap to mind - I`m sure there are loads more. What`s good, what`s not, and why?

The US version of `The Shining` is 20 minutes longer than the UK version, the extra scenes aren`t exactly essential but there`s some good moments in there. So if you`re thinking of buying it go for Region 1.

The TV version of `Repo Man` has lots of extra scenes in it which are quite good, unfortunately this version is unavailable on DVD.

Another good one that hasn`t been mentioned is the extended edition of `The Abyss`, which has a slightly more substantial ending than the Theatrical Cut!

Forgot about the Abyss - I`ve actually got he extended version, but I`ve only watched it once. I`ll have to dig it out again...

The extended version of the Exorcist is quite good- forget about the legendary "spider walk"- the scenes with the little girl being subjected to lots of medical exams is quite unsettling (especially when you have the volume turned up loud), and there are some excellent almost submlimial images thrown in.

Worth a look if you were impressed by the original.

Well said Shaun P!

I felt the same way after seeing the extended edition. Not that Leon was attracted to Matilda, but it did have a different feel to it that I didnt like.

Attacking the drug dealer in the apartment was an excellent scene though!

Betty Blue - The extra hour or so of footage in the directors cut gave even more depth into the already complicated minds of the 2 lead charectors. Pure art on the big screen.

Dances with Wolves - An extra 55 minutes makes an already good film into possibly THE best and most human Westerns...fantastic (oh and it hits DVD next month!!!)
