Back To The Future (R2) - 10 hours of special features?

J Bravo (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 6th December 2002, 16:40

On the back of the R2 BTTF triple pack is a Special Features sticker covering up the original Special Features info.

The original box info reads "10 hours of special features".
The new overlayed sticker: "5 hours of special features".

(The CDWOW pack (3 disc spindle) shows "5 hours" of extras)

Have we lost 5 hours of special features?

Or was it just a mistake that`s made the packaging of this important release look a bit naff?

I bought the DVD from Asda, as Asda gave me a £20 gift voucher (A kind of thank you for working at Asda) plus it was double discount day, which was 20%, so i got it for a bargin price of £3 odd!!!

At least that was what I thought was a bargin, until I tried them out. I feel that the DVDs are the biggest load of toss since the ET ultimate edition. I feel that I have been absoloutly ripped off. I really hate this DVD trilogy.

According to the BTTF.com they do say "Over 10 Hours of Never-Before-Seen Footage" is a slightly over exagerationn

It also stated that...

The international versions of the boxed-set will not contain all of the bonus materials that the domestic release will have. "

They are still finding more material to include in the domestic package, while the international version has already been put to bed,"
"Universal is very committed to putting out the best possible collection of supplements for the U.S. release, so the extra few months of waiting time will be worth it."

The US discs have in addition to what we have:-

Q&A with Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale
screen-specific audio commentaries
Did You Know That? Universal Animated Antecedents on ALL 3 movies not just the 1st one.
An EPK of Back to the Future part 3 the other 2 EPKs feature on other 2 discs.
All deleted scenes and f video-based vignettes on the trilogy`s special effects feature optional commentary by Gale
Enhanced Conversation with Michael J. Fox
music videos for "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis (on Part I and Part II)
The Secrets Behind the Back to the Future Trilogy on disc three

Also I bet they`ll have tons of trailers from teasers to theatrical instead of whats on this crappy region 2 discs.

Looks like I`ll be getting the region 1 set.

Region 2 has DTS, which is one reason why features are missing.

Region 1 has all the features but only DD 5.1 sound.

DTS or features?
Features or DTS?

Tough decision.

I wonder if American audiences are p***ed off about the lack of DTS

ok so i over exagerated on the being ripped off bit, but you would of thought they would treat their international fans with a bit more respect.

The US fans are really miffed about the missing DTS soundtrack, but I would prefer features over DTS as 80% of DVD owners don`t own a DTS system.

Personally I normally only watch the deleted/alternative scenes and out takes. But I do agree that the studios do tend to take the p*** giving the americans loads of extras and cutting half of them out for everyone else.

As for DTS, there was a thread a while ago arguing that there is no noticeable difference between DTS and Dolby. But like you say the americans are annoyed at not having it and have extras they may only glance over once. We have fewer extras but a soundtrack that they dont.

I have the region 4 version from CD WOW. got it in august when it came out. In my opinion, they are brilliant. Great transfers and sound with some decent extras forms a nice package. I was in my local whsmith and saw back to the future part one for £16.99. I couldnt help but have a huge smile on my face as for 50p more, I had gotten 2 more movies on 2 more discs about 5 months earlier. Sure the region 1 has more extras but it cant make up for the fact that I had gotten it 5 months earlier.

I wasn`t really impressed with the features of my R4 set, but at the end of the day I only paid £17 for three classic films and was able to experience them with DTS sound.

If I paid that amount for each film, I`d expect some really kickass features on each disc. But for £17, the films and the features included were O.K for me.

At the end of the day,how many times will the special features be watched? ( A possble thread topic maybe?)

I am holding on for the R1 and have been since the details of the disks were released. I for one like the extra features and that is the main reason I am a fan of (good) DVDs.

One of the heads at Universal said there is little or no difference between the 5.1 and DTS soundtracks. I do think it stinks that we are getting skanked for extras, yet again, just as I was beginning to think studios were starting to see the light.

Sticking DTS on the disks is just an excuse to relaese the set early so that the R1 version doesn`t affect the R2 sales too much. For those people who aren`t massive extras fans the R2 3 disk set is more than adequate and ceratinly not a rip-off at the RRP.

Who cares about extra features that much when we have the classic `Back to the Future` trilogy on glorious DVD! Too much emphasis goes onto the amount of special features anyway these days!! I mean , too much information about a making of a certain film can somehow detract from the actual viewing experience....too many cooks spoil the broth anyone?
