Page 1 of ULTIMATE ET OR ULTIMATE RIP OFF

Has anyone recieved there E.T. gift set yet,mine is on it`s way from play but after various reports i`m dubious about opening it to find i`ve been ripped off.OK i wanted the original 1982 version and don`t mind having the new version but reports that the standard edition contains both versions for around £17 is not only better value but i`m paying another £20 for the privelige of a cd script and seni tpye which i`m happy to own,it`s just now with days of the release date universal has sprung this surprise after it presells the expensive boxed version......... well hopefully it`s not a digi pack....

If all this is true then I`m absolutely appalled.
Firstly, I despised the 2002 special edition. I absolutely love E.T. and was well annoyed when i heard that the only way i could get the original 1982 version on DVD was on Region 1 and in the 3-disc gift set.

But, as alot of fans have done, I ordered the gift set just to get the version we should be able to get on its own.

So now it turns out that the `82 version is on the standard 2-disc edition and is in DTS???? What the hell???

My gift set should be arriving tomorrow, and if the 82 version only has a Dolby surround track when there`s a DTS one on the standard DVD I`m going to be furious.

Further to that, if it turns out that the Region 2 version has the `82 cut on the standard edition then I`m going to be livid!!!

What are Universal playing at?? Gobsmacking stuff!!!

I was suspicious of this as searching through the dvd comparisons site I noticed that it said the the 1982 version was on the 2 disc region 1 set. -

HOWEVER - look closely at the link below for the rewind dvd comaprison site and you will notice that at the very bottom it states " OVERALL : R1 - The US Region 1 release (Ultimate Collector`s Edition boxset) contains the original 1982 release and other extra features"

But reading the comparisons above this it states that both Reg 1 C.E. versions are only 2 disc and have listed them identically with the only difference being that the 1st one listed states that it is only out for 10 weeks.

I am still unsure of which version contains the 1982 film..........

can anyone confirm or deny any of the above comments

Universal reversed field Tuesday, announcing just a week before the DVD release of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" that the original 1982 theatrical version would also be included on the lower-priced "limited collector`s edition" DVD ($22.95).

The studio had said in June that the original version would be offered on DVD only as part of a $70 "ultimate collector`s gift set" edition of this year`s revised theatrical release.

"We received a huge response from fans who adore `E.T.` and wanted to own both versions of the film but weren`t planning to buy the ultimate collector`s gift set," said Universal Studios Home Video president Craig Kornblau.

My gift set has already been posted so i haven`t got the cancelling option. Its not that I mind particularly as having the soundtrack and a senitype will be fine.
But the fact that Universal has thrown this all on us so late in the day makes me wonder whether the R2 version will have the `82 cut on it now.

It seems that it was Spielberg who pretty much told Universal he wanted both cuts on the standard edition so not to do the same on the R2 version would provoke much controversy.

Anyway, I`d like to know whether the `82 cut is in fact in Dolby surround as they originally said or if it has a proper 5.1 mix like it should have!

It`s all a bit sus to me.

Your not going to tell me that they made a mistake and forget to tell us they`re releasing the 1982 version seperate as well.

They knew.

It was all a ploy to con us in to getting the ultimate edition because they knew we wanted the original.

They waited until 1 week before its release, when nearly everyone in the world has ordered the gift set, that they decided to tell us `oh we made a mistake`!!!

Even though it has been revealed that the 1982 cut of ET is on the two disc version of the R1 release (a late decision, but one that Steven Spielberg insisted on) they have had to drop certain special features from what they planned on the two disc set which I believe are "The Music of John Williams" and a "Making of" featurette. There is a picture of the Ultimate Edition on a website (not sure which but there is a link on the DVD Forums) and it does look absolutely fantastic and of course it has all the special features.

What is so confusing. Spielberg made the decision that the 1982 cut should be on the two disc set and because of this Universal had to remove some of the special features to fit the film on. Go to the DVD Forums and read all about it as there is far more detail there and they seem to have more of a clue about what is going on.
