Blue Ray coming sooner than expected, Collectors beware.!!!!

So it seems many of the manufacturers want to go for blue ray DVD player technowledgy rendering our good old red laser DVd discs the status of possibly going obsolite.
Why oh why are they trying to destabilise the DVd market which is just nicely starting to get going.
Also as most usual dvds could be done much better if a bit of effort was put in why bother at all. Just do a better job on the current ones.
I`m wondering whether to keep buying DVD`s or do you think China etc will still do ordinary DVd players but then also will you have new films released on both red and blue laser discs or what. And then oh dear no red laser dvd`s in a few years. And very unfair of them.
Totally crackers if you ask me.

Think the new Blue Ray players will still play red laser discs so you`ll be OK..

To get the general public many of whom have only just found out about DVD interested in blue ray it will have to be backwards compatible.

All the best,

To be backwards compatible it will have to have a red laser and possibly decription for that too as well as the blue side of things.
But why chuff about and ruin a good thing, one side of the shop for red one for blue seems daft to me.
Best mark.

Blu-Ray (uses a blue-violet laser) is currently only a recordable/rewrittable format (thats why it`s in a caddy)and is not intended as a replacement for pressed discs. This format was designed to get past the problem of multiple DVD rewritable formats. (problem is Toshiba messed this up by announcing a competitor for Blu-Ray, Toshibas is based on blue laser though and so will take longer to become available)

Blu-Ray players could easily be made backwards compatible with current dvds by adding an addition laser pickup. (in the same way that some current dvd players have 2 laser pickups, one for dvd, the other for cd)

they`ll need to do this right to exploit the huge interest in dvd i.e. backwards compatibility would have to be a given. just think - if they have the capacity they`re touted to have there`ll be no more compression artifacts, no pause during layer change, sharper pictures (no need for super-bit versions anymore...), etc, etc.
