Acer Laptop ASDA £399 - Anygood?

Bullitt79 (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 24th October 2007, 12:57

Hey,

Just popped ino ASDA at lunch time and noticed they had an Acer Laptop for sale at £399. Now ive heard Acer arent really the best laptops so wasnt really interested, until i saw the spec. I may be wrong here but it stated it was a Intel Dual core (not duo) processor, 2GB ram, 160 gb HD and that was all i could see. But for that spec it sounds a bargin laptop.

Ive been after a fairly decent spec laptop for editing in photoshop, but have found they are all out of my budget. Can anyone clarify if this laptop is in fact a "BARGIN" and if its worth getting one as cant find any reviews online?

Can`t really comment on what Asda are offering as I haven`t seen it, but Acer are the second biggest laptop brand in the market so must be doing something right.

I have had an Acer Aspire 5610Z since February and it is an excellent machine.

A friend has had an Acer laptop for about 2 years, it`s very nice and the screen is loads better than by s*** Acer monitor (it was going on what her screen is like that made me buy it!). The only problem with it is the sound is very tinny through the speakers, so beware of that.

Acer as a company are huge... they have bought out Gateway... and Packard Bell (well Gateway bought them)... think that makes them the 3rd biggest computer retailer in the world...

Their laptops, IMHO, tend to be cheap and cheerfull.. BUT on a big plus side they do offer some stunning extended warranty deals...

3 years accidental damage can be bought for sub £100 if you look around....

I would check your house insurance cover as most will not cover damage to laptops.....

Well with further investigation online, im not 100% sure its as good a bargin as i first thought. I believe Asda may have mis-advertised the processor. But im going to have alook after work, and shall post my findings.

I`m still using a 5 year old Acer Travelmate 260 with a P3 1000 mhz processor and it still works perfectly other than the knackered battery.

Obviously not an up-to-date machine but it does what I need it to do and hasn`t fallen apart.

I`ve had a couple of ACER laptops over the years and for doing your basics you can`t go wrong - the only issue I have had with them was the battery life is s***e - my latest new one only got about 2 hours out of it. Also have had to replace both DVDRom drives.

Acer are a well-respected company. Their Customer Service isn`t worth sh*t, but if things go wrong, their warranty repairs are fast.

I just bought an Aspire, one of their gemstone designs (designed by BMW, although it looks nice on outside kind of retro on inside... kind of looks like a kids laptop to be honest). I`ve got a fairly meaty spec and for quite a good price, Acer do seem to be well respected from what I`ve read. It performs really well so that`s the main thing, and I can just about survive through Vista...
