Sky Broadband upto 16MB Unlimited download Ten Pound Mth (Sky Cust Only)

Bullitt79 (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 26th August 2006, 20:51

Just been flicking through the monthly Sky magazine and noticed a advert for Sky Broadband.

They have three different packages for there customers.

The one that stuck out for me as the ten pound a month for upto 16MB (i think i can only get 2mb in my area) unlimted download (but with some restricts) all for ten pound. which aint bad considering im currently paying thirteen pound a month to Tiscali for a really bad service.

Does anyone know if SKy broadband is any good? As im moving house this week and think im going to stop using Tiscali as its so slow after 5pm, and can be really slow at D/L.

Well bit gutted now as ive found out im not in the area for that offer, but i can sign up to seveteen pound a month for upto 8mb and 40mb D/L limit. Which isnt the best deal around, though they do give you a free wireless router, which is nice of them!

Think i may go back to Demon, as there was never any issues with there speed. and they offer me a 3mb connection unlimted for 19.99.

Well, I have no experience of either Sky or Tiscali internet.

However, I do have experience of supplying and installing and maintaining Easynet`s high bandwidth DWDM optical network backbone (so what you say).

Well, Tiscali are Easynet`s main customer - they use the network we built for Easynet. Sky have now bought Easynet - guess which Optical backbone Sky are using (why did they buy Easynet?).

My guess is that you will not see much difference in the quality of your connection - they use the same s***e (cough) backbone we sold them !

I emailed sky a few weeks back and asked about the fair usage policy on the 16mb package, got a really vague answer back stating "The fair usage policy will be in place on the 16mb line", replied starting I was aware of that but could they tell me the terms and conditions of the policy, got another reply saying `all out internet packages will be subject to this policy` I called them to ask and was fobbed off.

A friend is on pipex and they have a fair usage policy, downloads are unlimited but they cap p2p and torrent speed to 20kps. I asked sky if they would be doing the same and they said they couldn`t tell me.

So does anyone know the terms of the fair usage policy?

i`m pretty sure they will continue to be very vague about it, the only way to know is if someone on here actually has the service, but as for capping p2p & torrents, i dunno about p2p (never use it myself) but i`m pretty sure you could get around it on torrents, clients such as utorrent can use random ports every time it starts, this "should" get around any port throtling they might try to impose..

I`ve spent weeks trying to get around it for her but it never goes above 22kbs on torrents. It`s a pity really as it would save me a bundle but I`m not prepared to leave a uncapped, unlimited service for one with restrictions. Although for the price it is very tempting. Guess I`ll just wait till more info is around.

Try using the option that encrypts the transport on torrents. (e.g. Azureus as a client allows this, as do a few of them).
The ISPs are able to tell whether traffic is P2P or not. Therefore, encrypting it makes it much more difficult for them. It does add a little to the CPU load, but not so you would notice.

Second what he says. I am on pipex and use the encryption. Speeds well over 20K.

:D The topmost speed I have had on a torrent - using the bog standard software was 120 - I have had 60s and 70s quite a bit, and usually have around 20-30. When downloading from the net otherwise, I have reached speeds of 700-800, and once actually touched 1m. All this on a 1m connection - I cant get anymore as I am too far away from the exchange.

I have no download caps (NONE - NO FAIR USE POLICY), no policing, and no problems with excellent tech support who helped me set up my router. All this for £14.99 a month. If you sign up online now you will get a month free and a free wireless router.

I am with AOL

and NO I dont work for them.
