Sherlock Holmes - The Complete Collection (Seven Discs) £17.99

From Blahdvd

There has never been a better on screen Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson than Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Throughout the war years they made fourteen films together and became the very embodiment of Holmes and Watson to thousands of people around the world. Their films stand the test of time and make great viewing for Sherlock Holmes fans, young or old. Over the course of the films Holmes is brought into the 20th Century "present day" to take on new villains..even the Nazis! but none of this detracts from the superb sleuthing.

Films include:
`Hound Of The Baskervilles`,
`Sherlock Holmes Faces Death`,
`The Secret Weapon`,
`Sherlock Holmes In Washington`,
`Spider Woman`,
`The Voice Of Terror`,
`The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes`,
`The Pearl Of Death`,
`The Scarlet Claw`,
`The Woman In Green`,
`Pursuit To Algiers`,
`The House Of Fear`,
`Dressed To Kill`
`Terror By Night`.

Its £23.99 at Play so seems a good price

Is this the really well transferred set? Oh dear - where`s that Mr. Oates when you need him? I`d snap this up in a nano second (the set is riding high on the wishlist) if it`s the set that Mark O. was recommending...does anyone know if it is? :/

Dunno but there is a 14 disc set on Play for £98.99!!! This is probably the remastered version & the blah ones the original transfers. Just my guess though.

Hello, my ears are burning. One of the drawbacks of getting old and hair growing out of them - always the danger of bush fires.

Now - Sherlock Holmes. Definitive Collection good, Complete Collection bad. The Definitive Collection Spiny Norman refers to is the fully restored UCLA print set by Optimum. At £25 it`s a steal. The other collection is by Orbit and consists of the fuzzy old PD print set. They`re ghastly. One of the movies is sourced off a fifty-year-old 16mm television transmission print, and standards converted to really get rid of those pesky details.

Phew! Close one.... I`ll be doing the decent thing and ordering the definitive set. Many thanks as ever to our very own Mr. Oates - a man who`s encyclopeadic knowledge of all things filmic puts the IMDB and BFI to the back of the class!! ;)

Very tempting, but I still prefer Jeremy Brett...

The cheaper set`ll look horrible...

Oh, and anybody thinking the 14 disc set for £98 will be the best, think again - they`re the same masters as the £17.99 set!
