Cartridges (genuine) approx £10 per colour , £15 for Black.
Compatibles as always are cheaper but thats pretty steep pricing whichever way you look at it.
(I pay .87 each for my Canon compatibles or 3.87 for genuine).

Cheapest I`ve found is £5.90 for compatible and £8.99 for originals. Still a lot more expensive than the Canon but cheaper than £15.

any canon printer that uses BCI24C and BCI24BK or 21 range (and alot do) have replacment carts everywhere, for around £1 or cheaper.
some of their newer printers have carts a little more expensive but only £1/2 each.
check out which canon you like first (they are IMO the best printers/ all-in-ones you can get) and then google the carts or use pricerunner etc. ebuyer is also a great place for carts. canon are the cheapest to run and maintain.
HP- ink way too expensive, avoid (they make 70% or so revenue from ink)
Lexmark- avoid printers and ink at all costs, like the plague
Epson- not bad on the whole, chipped carts rip you off, printers are good
Canon- best ink prices for original or replacement, best printers in every respect

Has anyone had any luck with the refill kits or is it just a load of hassle and mess?
RE: Network ready all-in-one printer - £88 + deliv.
depending on your printer make and model, some replacements (3rd party) are so cheap, why bother with refilling?
but if it is a HP/ lexmark/ dell i can understand you trying. can be messy and not always work properly, avoid if you can but if you cant give it a try: either a DIY refill kit as in tesco or a refill station in computer etc store

It`s a Brother and the cheapest compatible I can find is about £4.90. I`ll give it a go once it runs out and just get a compatible if it doesn`t work.
Cheers

Thanks to OP.
I tried to get one of these when Makro ran it as a special a few weeks ago - all sold when I got there.
Not the best printer or scanner but great value for an all-in-one. Network printing, scanning and faxing for under £100, not forgetting the ADF which was the clincher for me.

I`m quite impressed with it - adf is a great addition too.
Cheapest online inks I`ve found are:
http://www.inkandstuff.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=61894
and
http://ink4print.co.uk/acatalog/Brother_MFC_5840cn.html
both around £6.00 per cart.
