Tesco iQon PC

mart40 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 6th January 2005, 23:18

Just spotted at Tesco (can`t find similar price and spec on Tesco website) an iQon home PC. Forgot to jot down model no, but the specification includes

AMD Sempron 2800
256mb RAM
80GB Hard Disk

Also included in the package are a Philips CRT, Logitech keyboard and mouse,Speakers and a Lexmark Z615 printer.
The package costs £398 - is this good value for money ? - not sure how the AMD Sempron compares with other chips.

Mart :/

Seen a similar deal/spec with Staples for about £399 with a 17" CRT monitor but with a HP printer (Lexm really make the money on the ink cartridges for stupidly priced printers, as do HP but not as extortionate as Lexm IMO)

i`d avoid sempron chips if poss (ditto celeron) but it comes down to "bang for buck" if the moneys right, go for it, i have a similar celeron chip in my laptop, certainly not the best, but it does exactly what i want it to do (and a bit more) and it was the right price.

Sempron`s just the new name for the Athlon XP Processors. It doesn`t mean their worse, just older. With AMD being associated with value(true) they wanted to separate out the Sempron(Athlon XP) and Athlon 64 as people might wrongly assume the Athlon 64 is worse.

More recent celerons aren`t so bad either.

the sempron is actually quite a good chip, very comparable to the Duron and the thunderbird chip range a few years ago.

Its cache is slightly ramped down, but for most things the sempron is plenty powerful.

Comparing it to the celeron is actually doing it quite an injustice as its a decent chip in its own right. Plus you can get one on the cheap now and upgrade to a powerful 64 chip at a later date. For the money its probably best in show, to be honest.

Not that simple as the 2800 Sempron uses a socket A motherboard, but the Athlon 64 chips needs either a socket 754 or a socket 939 motherboard. So to upgrade to an athlon 64 chip you would need a new mobo and prossesor, usually the two most expensive parts of a PC.

Don`t think so. You can buy, for example a Sempron 3000 chip and a 3000 XP chip. The XP one is more expensive.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

To continue the contradict mania, Tom, there are two different types of Sempron. Socket A and Socket 754, which are based on the Athlon 64 architecture. So ner ner.

Yeah, but only the Sempron 3100+ uses the socket 754, the 2800+ as mentioned in this thread is only available for socket A.
