Alternative to Word & Excel

Those of you who have blagged your works copy of Microsoft Office to use at home (which you`d think the MS licence would allow, but doesn`t) may like to know that there is a free and easy-to-use alternative from `602 software` on www.software602.com/products/pcs

This has most of the functionality for Word and Excel, plus a reasonable photo editor, and both reads and writes in the same format. You can download it, if you`re patient (it`s 22Mb) or you can find it on the front of the current Computer Buyer magazine. The programs are fast and will appear completely familiar to regular MS users, while somehow managing a more friendly `look & feel`.

I`ve no connection with the suppliers, but if they can make a living from this, it shows how much we`ve all been screwed by MS in the past...

I`m an OpenOffice user. We use at the office because it`s free and it works for us. Write (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet), Impress, (think `PowerPoint`) and Draw (for diagrams and stuff). It works very well at opening and saving MS Office files. No real complaints here about it cos it`s free! It`s worth checking out if you`re looking for a free alternative to Office.

Did I mention it was free? :D

I use openoffice too. Used to use StarOffice until Sun started charging for it but OpenOffice is just the open source version

Something that people may find particularly useful with OpenOffice is that you can save documents as a PDF file (the sort viewed with Adobe`s Acrobat).
