I`ve just bought a Compacks DVD 5000 from safeway. After using the Region hack supplied on the Compacks website the machine plays everything the picture quality is very good. It ouputs PAL not PAL60 macrovision is off. It plays JPEG, MP3, DVD-R and DVD+R everything I`ve tried in it, and has progressive scan plus 5.1 outputs. It is also the thirteenth DVD player I have tried and it the one I`m keeping.

any more questions post below and I`ll try to answer

A couple of questions -
1) the price is £59.99 ? - Clayts posted a week back that he`d got one for £49.97 - is there any money back guarantee ?

2) You can turn off macrovision on this and it plays SVCD - how`s it handle music ?

I know - a bit over the top for 60 notes - but you`ve got to check what you`re getting.

Wow £40 they`ll be soon giving them away !!
I think it does play SVCDs (though I havent tried). Not too certain about macrovision.
But there is lots of info about the player on clayts` area450 site. A good player for £50 even better at 40 !

Definitely

Sampo got heavily fined by the MPAA two years ago for their loose Macrovision hackability. All players released since have been unhackable with the remote.

However, from this period onwards some "underground hacking" went on which involved modifying the ESS chipset hex code which makes up the firmware (software which controls the player). The 512KB firmware file was easily extracted from the socketed flash EEPROM chip (using an external EEPROM programmer) on the player`s processor board.

Since 2002, to save on component costs, Sampo have reverted to using Mediatek processor boards, which rely on a larger 1MB firmware file which is stashed in a soldered down (rather than a socketted) EEPROM. Even if the firmware could be extracted, it`s a completely different hex code system which, as far as I know, has not been hacked.

Thus, MV off is a complete no no at present :-(
