Top notch PC at Aldi!

HD462 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 18th December 2002, 17:24

I`ve just been in our Aldi and saw a PC on the shelves for £750. It isn`t in this weeks flyer so I don`t know how long they`ve had it in, but the spec was top notch. I can`t remember much of the spec, there was that much, but it was made by Medion (P4 2.66Ghz) and well worth a look. It was PC only, they had monitors too to buy seperately, a 19" one for £120.

There`s a pic here which looks like it:

I liked the way it has a lot of connections on the front too for plugging digi cameras etc in. There was USB2, Firewire, Smartmedia & Compact Flash card reader slots etc all on a panel at the front, as well as the normal rear ones.

Wish I had £750 spare...lol

Mark.

£890 for a PC. that should buy a lot of PC

it all depends on what components they have used inside, regardless of what CPU they have used

I can guarantee that in the majority of cases that pre-built PC`sat places like ALDI use inferior parts i.e. memory, hard drive, graphics etc etc to make a low priced PC appealing but you will suffer when you try to upgrade in future months as it will have the basic essentials inside just for it to work. They leave no room for upgrade as that would be extra expence

It`s the same at most places. The best place to go is either yo your local computer fair with someone who knows how to build one if you don`t know yourself, or just get a local computer shop to prebuild one for you. You will either save money or get better spec PC for the same price and more relevant components to suit yor needs

Local yellow free ads paper has loads of local computer shops in it, not PC World etc!!

don`t get me wrong I ain`t knocking your post, I`m just trying to help people a little unsure about computers that they ain`t as complicated as they think

Yep, that`s the one. All quality parts inside. I don`t know where you get the £890 from Mister X. The price is £750 base unit only. They also stock monitors if you need one, but it`s not an all in deal. I personally prefer that way, if you have a PC already, you may not need all the other stuff, but only want the base unit.

I know a fast processor doesn`t make a good PC, it was the only thing I could really remember of the specs, as you`ll see, there was quite a lot to remember. But I did remember that they were all good components :-)

I`d hardly call them inferior parts, they`re all branded quality components. If you look on the Medion web site you`ll see they don`t make all these electrical products with their name on them. They are a company that sets up high profile outlets for various manufacturers to get their products into a market place they wouldn`t normally be sold in ie: supermarkets.

DOH!!

£750 system + £120 monitor=£890 hmmmmmm..

maybe I was think of £20 delivery charge or is it £20 shopping that you will get cos they have 24 cans of carling for £9.99 so you will get 2 slabs for XMAS :-)

I`ll admit after seeing spec it`s quite a good deal if you compare it other prebuilt systems, but I`d still rather buy my own bits and customize it to what I am gonna use it for

I have a computer here that I have have spent over 2K on building myself in the last couple of months, and I sometimesI wonder how much this would be in as a prebuilt system?

but I`ve also built budget PC`s for friends and family from between £400 & £600 that compete with prebuilt systems costing more

again, good deal for £750

Still at least three left in Sellers Wood, Bulwell, Nottingham this afternoon, plus a couple of LCD monitors (£250), scanners (£50), CRT monitors (£120) and HP printers (sorry, didn`t note the price).

It`s a good spec, better than my new pc, but none left in Edinburgh. For anyone looking for an £800 all in, Watford Electronics have an AMD1800, 256Mb (DDR2700), 5.1 Sound (on board), ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (128Mb), 60Gb 7200rpm HD, 16x DVD, 40/12/48 CD/R/RW, Surround Sound speaker set, V90 Modem and 19" CRT Monitor with XP pre-installed. Apart from XP`s many annoying habits (which I`m spending my weekend hunting down and destroying) I`m very happy with it. Monitor isn`t flat screen but very good picture, can now play POW, RCW and MoH without system crashing.
