RE: moulin rouge @ tesco.com

Don`t know about Moulin Rouge specifically, but all DVD`s at my local Tesco are VAT free this week. Some prices seem to be cheaper on their website, though - e.g Planet of the Apes (2001) £12.59 on the web, £13.59 in store as far as I can see (also Swordfish, Fast & Furious).
Still - pretty good, especially as I have £16 in clubcard vouchers...

Any Subwoofer bargains?

Hi. Has anyone seen any bargains on cheap subwoofers - qed seem to have good prices, does anyone know of any better ones? Sub £150, preferably sub £100.
If qed are the best, does anyone have any experience / recommendations for any of the models in this price range?

Thx.
Ben

RE: Kenwood or Sony Amp??

I have the Kenwood KRFV5050 (£159 is qed-uk.com). It`s my first home cinema amp, and I know the "serious" people with serious money to spend sneeze at it, but I`m very pleased.

RE: Red Planet on VHS for £4!!

Pah. VHS we spit on you.

Sorry. Got carried away there. :-)

RE: Multi region player`s worthwhile ??

I sit corrected - thanks for clearing up my misconception on this point.

RE: Multi region player`s worthwhile ??

My feeling is, if it has a remote hack to make it multiregion you will always be OK, but if you are relying on "chipping", there could be problems with any future changes (as has happened to friends of mine with the occurence of RCE.)
Is this viewpoint sensible?

RE: Eltax Stargate X1 5.1

If you go to the Eltax web site you can download their catalogue as a PDF (Acrobat) file. This give you the info about the X1 and X2 sets - I think that the X1s are board, and the X2s are cast Aluminium, as they are over 3 times the mass (I`m a physics bod, so I can`t bring myself to say weight :-) ).
Download the catalogue, drool, then decide you can`t afford it.
Post what you choose and why, as I`m lining up to buy something similar soon, maybe.

RE: Which Amp to buy?

Say, thanks lewjosh. That is subtle! I`ve got the pdf brochure from Eltax detailing the X.1 and the X.2s, and I didn`t notice that the richer ones have the larger center, which is the only visible difference!
Surprising really that Richer don`t take trouble to point out that theirs are the X.2s as they nearly lost my business for speakers over it.
I`ll be in there in a couple of months to buy some when I`ve saved up a bit more.

Thanks again for the heads up!

RE: Help please - Good hackable DVD recommendation required - approx £200

I`d second that. Several magazines rate it as the best under £300 or even £400, yet it is only £200 ish. I`ve had mine 6 months, and I`m really pleased.

RE: Which Amp to buy?

As you say, the Kenwood reviews well on homecinemachoice.com, but then so does the Sherwood - OK, maybe not quite as well, but then it is about £50 cheaper on Richersounds. Has anyone directly compared them?

Skirpydoink - you are pleased with the Eltax Stargates. Westy thinks they sound thin, I presume you don`t agree.
Anyone else got any experiences / comparisons?

RE: Yamaha TSS1 surround sound system

By chance, I have just found it on www.qed-uk.com for £151.68, free delivery. Under home audio - home cinema. May save a few quid.

Separates or "out of the box" for £300?

Hi guys. Superb site, fascinating forum. My turn to ask for your sage advice :-)

I`ve had an LG3350 since Jan, and been saving towards a surround system. I reckon that within the next few months I can spend around £300 (by the Jan sales at the latest - whole house to renovate / decorate makes saving slow, alas).
DTS is a must (noticable difference at the cinema, imho), so I started by thinking of Digitheater DTS or (after reading this forum for a while) Yamaha VS-10, but I would really rather go the separates route - more scope for upgrades later, and for "tinkering". (I love to tinker, hence the 6 computers surrounding me in various states of constructino - sad, aren`t I :-o )

So - the QUESTION - can I get a speaker package and dts a/v amp for £300(ish) to sound as good as a VS-10? All advice welcome.

Why ask now? Well, looking on the forum, I see QED (www.qed-uk.com) have ELTAX STARGATE X.1 SUB+5 SPKS SILVER for £109. They look smart, are small (a big plus) and are on other sites for £300 and more. I could buy these now and get the amp in a few months if they are any good, and this is the bargain it seems.

RE: Yamaha TSS1 surround sound system

Where from at that price?

RE: LG3350e -> Amp and Speakers

The 3350 has a built in decoder, not a built in (power) amp - can`t connect speakers straight to it :-(

Anyone out there with any EXPERIENCE of different amp/speaker combinations or combined sets at a fairly sane price (say less than £300) which they can give the benefit to us "still playing our DVDs through a stereo" people?

RE: LG3350e -> Amp and Speakers

I`m in the same position as daveo (by the way, thanks IT Troll, for the hack - I found it from your web site before it was published widely, and it was one of the factors that influenced me to buy the 3350, which I`m very pleased with.)

Difficulty with the Digitheatre LC - no remote. Same with the slightly more expensive Yamaha set which I`ve seen discussed. :-(

This being the case, I reckon I`m going to have to go for the original Digitheatre, which seems to be about £200. But then I wasted my cash on getting a player with a built in decoder. Hmmmmm...

Thoughts would be very welcome from anyone with any ideas, or even better, any experience. Thanks.

Billy Elliot Pre-order only £9.99

www.tesco.com/vision
Most prices seem average at best, but Billy Elliot at £9.99 might be useful to someone. Correct me if I`m wrong, but that looks like a good price, and I THINK it includes the P&P.

Have a nice day.

RE: Are LG`s anygood?

I have a 3350, and I`ve been very pleased with it. The 3350 does play CD-R and RW.

I can`t give you a side by side comparison of picture etc., but the 3350 does have an onboard decoder, if that is any use to you.

The hack is easy - just don`t slow down while you are typing it in.

RE: futureent.com have gone bloody mad!!!!!!

Thanks for the excellent tip!

I`ve got "A River Runs Through It" and "The Princess Bride" - two utter faves - for £11 and £10 respectively. Excellent prices, and they are both only on R1 (as yet).

Why don`t we Europeans like these excellent films...
