Does your TV output the picture back through one of it`s SCARTsockets?

The Tosh I have does.

So the DVD goes into Scart 1 on the TV, the VCR goes into SCART 2 on the TV. The TV outputs whatever channel is being watched to SCART 2.

So, to record DVD, select Scart 1 on the TV and the correct AV input on the VCR.

Does that make sense?!?

I`m guessing here, but it may be a fault with the switch box.
If you have a switch, then I would have thought that one should be isolated when the other is selected. Maybe there`s a short in the box between the two connecters. What if you swap the two leads around. Does the problem move onto the dvd?

I had a 3 way phono cable (audio Left, Audio right, Video I mean) around 10ft long connecting a VHS to a projector and that was OK, but of course video is not as good as dvd to start with. I got it from Sevenoaks in Plymouth, but any Hi-Fi shop should have it.

Does the dxr card have phono output? I would guess that the phono would be better that an s-video cable because each core on a decent long phono lead is heavily shielded. Typically, s-video leads would not have such good (if any) shielding and would be more prone to interference. This would be more of a problem on long leads that can act as an arial for mains hum etc.

To connect to a Scart socket, you`ll need another adapter. Also check that the Scart input on your TV can be set to s-video, else you`ll get a B&W picture.

Bit of a long shot, but if you`re anywhere near Bury, there`s a shop in The Rock 9I think it`s called) that does them. I don`t know the name, I was there on a business trip last week.

Apart from using a long cable ;-) Argos do a radio frequency video/remote sender kit for around £90 that broadcasts very good quality picture and sound. But that`s almost as much as a cheap dvd player and bare drive for the pc :-[

Backing up to a Tosh V-858B

Has anyone managed to get a good copy from dvd on a Toshiba V-858B or V-859B. I get b&w copies when I try. I`ve checked everything is set to PAL & standard vhs, not s-vhs. I`ve used SCART and phono leads. Its a region 2 disk and Macrovision is disabled.

Any info would be great.

According to the database on the yahoo group 2.23 is macro free. No it doesn`t solve the mp3 problem.
2.32 is in beta and should be the dog`s b0ll0ck$.

The yahoo group (no don`t go yet. Hear me out!) does have many posts, and yes there are a lot of questions.

The answer to your f/w question is in the database section. Have you joined? You`ll have to join to get acces to anything other than posts.

2.23 is the latest official release. 2.32 is just round the corner. The later versions give better picture & sound quality, fixes mp3 bugs and improves svcd support. All the official firmware (and unofficial if you agree to a disclaimer and get a password) can be downloaded from the files section.

RE: Scan SC2000 firmwares 2.14 & 2.23 buggy with VCDs

2.32 is in Beta and may be released Monday. The VCD playback is reported to be better. Picture and sound is also reported as greatly improved.
check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Scan2000 for the latest info & firmware.
You`ll have to get a password from the group to use anything later than 2.23 as it is not official yet and it will void your warranty.

And if you haven`t got av sockets, you need to get an rf modulator. This will take an av input and output it as a `normal` tv signal using an arial socket. I thnk there about £20 from maplin.

Most "real" (ie guitar, piano, woodwind but not electronic keyboards) musical instruments will produce low freq harmonics. These will be amplifies out of all proportion by the sub. I turn mine off for music. It is only really useful for the engineered base that you get on films.

I agree that the `buy the book` volume should be set so that it just starts to enrich the base on normal bit of the film/music.
You should point the sound output away from a wall and at an angle. If it points directly at a wall, standing waves can be set up and give hot & cold spots. This can even happen off a back wall that is several meters away.

Firmware is the program that controls the dvd player and lets it know how to best play dvd, vcd or mp3`s etc. The dvd player will already have firmware in it, but many players (like the SCAN) allow you to update the firmware by putting a cd in the drive. The advantage is that bugs can be fixed, and imporvements can be made to picture and sound quality. The disadvantage is you can load the wrong type and your dvd player may not work properly or even at all

I would assume the phono output from the amp is not amplified, so you need a heafty drive unit, a large box to put it in and an amplifier with adjustable frequency response so that you can match it to your front pair. That`s why the pre built units cost £100 upwards.

How much power does your pro logic amp kick out on the front speakers (when in pro logic mode). The Kenwood 7030 kicks out 60W in pro logic and I was recomended that the subwoofer sould be double the stereo. I ended up with a Yamaha 100w at £170. I dont think you`ll get much change out of £150 for anything half sensible. The cheap speaker sets I`ve seen are only 5w or 10w.
I`d rather spend the £20 on a new dvd to watch!

Pro logic is carried within the standard stereo signal, so if you connect the stereo out to a prologic amplifier, you shoud be OK

Many amps these days are Dolby 5.1. Make sure you get one that will do Pro Logic as well.

Do N64 games have pro logic soundtracks? Most games and videos that have dolby 5.1 also have pro logic, but it`s not always the case.

I got stuck on 1.80 after downgrading. Scan have just agreed to swap my dvd player out for a new one after I offered to make a donation to comic relief if they did it by red nose day. I just wanted to let you know that there are humans working at SCAN. :-)
Before all the negative posts come in, I want to stress that the donation was my doing not a suggestion from SCAN.

Scan customer services may be a little slow, but how many other companies will do a swap out by courier. Normally you`d have to send yours back, wait, wait, wait and eventually get a replacement.

Yes, you can get Scart to Phono leads. I got one with Scart and phono audio in/out at one end and phono audio & video in/out at the other. It is described as a "Scart + 2 phono to 6 phono" lead on the box! I got it some time ago from a hi-fi shop. It was quite pricey at around £20 quid, but it did have gold plated phono plugs. Most Hi-Fi shops do them and I`ve seen similar in Currys & Dixons

There seems to be more abuse aimed at bear than anything else at the moment and that`s worse than the odd way off comment from bear isn`t it?

BTW the ip thing wont work because the isp will assign a random one from a large range, so unless you ban all ip numbers from a given isp I don`t think he can be blocked even he anybody wanted to.

I Disagree. It depends heavily on the encoding. Granted, it`s not as good as CD, but it`s not too far off.
Anyway, I only use it for background music and I get 8 - 12 hours worth of random tracks without touching the player (should I want it). If I`m in the mood for sitting down and listening to music properly, then I`ll use the original CD.

Hi,
Wiring up the pc to the hifi is no problem, but the PC is noisey compared to a dvd player, takes ages to power up, and as I dont have a TV card, it would use loads more room. Finally, the PC is is a different room to the Hi-fi so that it can bu used without interfering with the family watching TV (through the hi-fi of course).

Who says the art of conversation is dead!!!

Thanks for trying. I`ll give the 1.80 stuff a go tonight and let you know. Also I`ll try the 1.95 if you or I can find it, but what about the problem mentoned where the machine dies if you use the wrong firmware for the decoder? Do you think this could this be a problem with 1.95?

Toy_car. Yes I did read the warning in Nivz FAQ, but that is absolving Nivz from his responsibility, which of course is totaly understandable. SCAN as the `experts` have the responsibility to ensure the advice they give is sound, and remember they link to the FAQ on thier info page . I`m sure this is what consumer law thinks about the matter. I`m looking into it.

Paul. Scan sent me the firmware and FAQ because I asked them for a video friendly version to replace the 2.07 it came with. It was from Barry Moss not Nelley. I just mentioned Nelley because he seems to look at the posts.

Hey Ed. Do I get your sympathy as well ;-)

Paul. I don`t think we need to take this lying down. Surely SCAN have been negligent in not warning us about the problems of downgrading and upgrading firmware. I was sent a new firmware version by SCAN along with the FAQ mentioning up/downgrading, so in effect they advised me to do this.

I suspect they are learning with us, but we shouldn't be the ones to pay for the development of the player.

Nelley. If you're listening. What can you do to help us out here. Can you send us a new eeprom to put in our players along with a letter giving us permission to open the case without voiding our warranty. We won't do it again. We promise!!
