Yes it`s hackable, but only by adding a mod to it (not quite chipping - but close). Out the box will be region two only.

Take it to somewhere like Upgrade Heaven or HiFi Store.

Once that`s done (I went to UG Heaven) then you`ve got on really nice DVD player that will play any region you like (even RCE disks) in auto mode.

Can`t fault that.

So pay an extra £10 and get it from Upgrade Heaven ... they`re in stock and should be with you next day.

Just got mine from them - well impressed.

Their couriers suck, but the company is nice and Justin is a very helpfull guy.

BTW ... they also have a very nice RCE compliant auto region change mod installed for that price too (it even has manual change backup).

Plays The Patriot, X-men, T2: UE, Pitch Black and loads of R2 disks just fine!

Pioneer DV535 / players for £250 tops

Hi all,

I`m looking for a replacement DVD player (the Wharfy 750S had to go - it wouldn`t play Spaceballs right!)

I`m going to have (after the refund etc) around £250 to spend and am wondering what the best player is for that money and which is the best multi-region hack for it (I know it`s got to be chipped).

The current favourite is the Pioneer DV535 from either hifistore or upgradeheaven - upgradeheaven are currently winning as their mod claims to be RCE compatible in auto mode.

Is there a RCE compliant "auto mode" chip available for it, or are upgradeheaven doing a sales pitch?

Any problems anyone has had with this player I should watch out for?

What`s the layer change like - small, bad, similar to the Wharfy 750S?

One last thing, how is the firmware upgraded on this player - flash?

Two ways of doing this ... the hard way (using the 82997 code - but you must press enter after each number) OR ...

just hit the goto button, then "title #3" and away you go :)

Are you putting the SCART output from the 750S into a passthru on your VCR?

If so what you are seeing is the effects of Macrovision copy protection.

It`s "normal" and the best way to get round it is to plug the DVD player stright into the TV SCART.

Or pay £50 to get Macro disabled on the 750S ;)

That 6th Sense thing is a known problem, not your disk.

Once the movie is playing just hit stop then play again, the bars will go away.

I`ve got a 2nd Gen 750S and R1 X-men ... plays no problems at all - converted to PAL60.

Event the "branching extended version" plays fine.

Must be something you`re (not) doing...

"No."? With a sweeping statement like that I do hope you own or have owned one.

I own one. (one of the Second gen 750S machines) and for under £200 can`t really fault it.

Sure it has some minor niggles, but for under £200 what do you expect?

It has yet failed to play a movie for me, the picture and sound are perfectly acceptable, in fact, I keep being amazed how crisp and clear it is.

The only faults I`ve found can be worked around with ease (like stopping and resuming the playback).

Yes there are better players on the market, but most of them are twice the price.

Sure I`d love a Sony 735 - but not for £500 I wouldn`t!

Try the "later batches" hack ... something like prev/next play step ... but that`s from an old memory.

Search these forums, there`s a website (I forget the URL) that will fit a no-macro mod to the 750S for £50

or you can DIY it for £30.

the hack for the first gen 750S is 4 1`s THEN the region code, not three one`s then the code.

That could be your problem.

Seeing how the 750S can do RCE anyway, just drop in the region free hack.

As the hack states, put the remote about 4 inches from the sensor as the drive tray can get in the way.

Either you cn go DTS, or else you need a Dolby Pro Logic decoder (at least) to decode the output into 5 Speaker setup.

The 750S has no direct outputs for the extra 3 speakers ... so a decent Hi-Fi is probably your best bet.

Just make sure the box is sealed from Wharfedale ... that way tesco`s can`t have screwed it up ;)

RE: NTSC -> PAL conversion

Use PAL60 if you`ve got that option on the Sony.

Dropping NTSC to PAL loses one in five frames (going from 30/sec to 35/sec) and this tends to cause "jerks".

PAL60 is a half-way house, i.e. it`s 60Hz, 30 frames/sec PAL.

The 0123 one.

The 750S hack only applies to certain Zoran chipset machines, the 750 is based on an LSI core.

if it uses the 0-7-5-0-region number hack then it`s a newer one ... if it uses the 1-1-1-1-region number hack then it`s the "old" 750S.

If you get one in a store it`s likely to be a newer one I thnik ... but the region hack is the best way to figure it out.

Nope just burn a regular data CD full of MP3 files.

The 750S will then play then in strict aplhabetical order ... best if you name the file with a number like 001, 002 etc at the beginning so you know what order they will play in.

You can group files in directories too ... dirs are done in alpha order, then files each each folder, so you can sort the cd by artist etc.

It handles CD-RW quite nicely too ... saves you losing a blank when your music tastes change!

There appears to be a known problem with that disc and players that use the LSI chipset.

This includes the 750 (not the 750S though), Grundig 210/210A and a few others.

It`s either find an exchange and get a 750S or wait for a firmware update I`m afraid.

It all depends on which version of the 750 you have.

If it has a DTS logo you should be fine, if it`s one of the early ones which didn`t, then from what I`ve read, it`s pot luck - some do, some don`t.

If you have a logo and it doesn`t work then take it back and get a 750S for free :)

as for CD-R and CD-RW I can`t see the use except for Audio and MP3 disks.

Any CD player can read CD-R (if it`s any good), but quite a few won`t read CD-RW disks.

Yeah, when it comes to data a CD-RW is just a CD-R that can be "blanked".

A CD-RW worked fine on my 750S (although I did close the CD-RW)

The non-S version doesn`t do MP3 playback.

No it doesn`t make it a 750S ... the 750S is based on different electronics ... that`s why Galdiator Disk2 works.

It handles CD-RW disks OK too, which is handy.

The files are played in STRICT alphabetical order ... but be warned .. computers will order like this:

Rule of thumb ... always use leading zeros :)

It will go directory by directory (alphabetically), so you can play by artist or whatever. I just stick em all in the root myself.

Officially no you can`t get rid of Macro on the 750S, however I`m not having too much in the way of problems recording R2 discs to my Aiawa VCR from my 750S (connected via SCART lead)

Only visual impact is a very very slight change in brightness every 30 seconds or so ... unless you are looking for it you don`t see it.
