Netgear DG834GT - avoid like the plague

jezbar (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 10th December 2006, 01:13

I bought this wireless modem router 16 months ago - after 8 months all the lights went out. After a very painful 45 mins to India I finally got the go ahead to send the unit back for a new one. Guess what after 8 months it has gone wrong again and another 45 painful minutes to India they have agreed to swap it again - of course 45 mins on a National phone number as well >:(

The person I was talking to thought Northamptonshire was a City!

This time I thought I would check the power supply and instead of it pushing out 12V DC as it is meant to it is kicking out 16.7V DC so I guess it has cooked the unit!

I too have just been suffering the Netgear Call Centre.

A few weeks ago I purchased a Netgear MP101 from Staples as a `Clearance Item`, when I got around to installing it I found it was DOA. As I had only paid £19.91 it didn`t want to return it to Staples for a refund so I contacted Netgear for repair/replacement.

Spent 30 minutes on the line to the Indian call centre, the line is terrible noisy and very faint. The operator was friendly enough but had to constantly refer to a `superior`. This was a completely dead unit so no technical analysis was needed but it still took 30 minutes to get transferred to someone who could actually arrange the replacement. Once you have got that far the process isn`t bad they arrange collection and the replacement arrived within 5 days.

However I had sent a mint condition unit and received a rather tatty refurb which rattled!! So back on to the call centre for another 20 minutes, then transferred to an American/Canadian guy who efficiently arranged another swap, he couldn`t guarantee the condition of the next replacement and suggested that I call their fullfilment company directly.

Not too happy so I emailed Netgear CS and within a couple of hours I received an apologetic email promising that a NEW unit would be shipped next working day.

I will update if it arives OK.

I would agree for a different reason - mine crashes every time I connect to torrents and my main PC is using it`s onboard gigabit connection :(
