Play.com - Conspiracy Theory
Have noticed that the prices on Play.com can fluctuate quite a bit.
Here`s a thought - maybe they drop the price of a certain DVD to 8.99 for about a week to get it into the Top 10, then raise the price to 13.99 the next week while it is still a top seller.
Someone then comes in, looks at the Top 10, buys that DVD (because it must be a bargain) and pays the new (high) price.
Take the price of The Usual Suspects for example:-
8.99 two weeks ago (sending it into Top 10);
13.99 last week;
8.99 this week.
(There`s alot of other`s as well)
Or maybe I am just being paranoid!!

Its actually just showing that Play really know what they are doing.
Don`t most record companies do this with thier CD singles, £1.99 a week later 3.99.
Bear.
PS I agree with your theory.
Good business sense IMO.
Dunno about the DVDs but they seem to price PC Games cheaper before release, then when it`s out the price goes up.
I assume it`s to encourage forward orders so they can guage the stock levels they`re gonna need.
Or it may be that Play know that they get more orders after a game or DVD is released, so they bump the price up for then - and for those who pre-order it (for a better price) love Play, and will then spend more money on the site...even if the prices are higher.
Mind you, your theory sounds right too - I suppose all of our musings come together in Play HQ: that`s why they`re so successful.

RE: Play.com - Conspiracy Theory
I have not got a lot of experience with Play but when cD WOW! Changed the price of somethigng which i had pre-ordered they sent me a voucher for the differenence - you can`t be fairer. Their prices tend to stay the same unless there is a sale on.
RE: Play.com - Conspiracy Theory
Noticed that The Usual Suspects is back in Play.com`s Top 10 (price = 8.99).
Wonder what the price will be next week!!??
