I think 1st gen iPhones are all locked to O2 unless you jailbreak them, in which case you need to re-jailbreak it.

I wrote this for a guy I sold my original 1st gen too, who was unable to even download a file off the internet, but I`ve dug it out and hopefully the URLs are all still valid, and you are a tad more capable than he was! :)

Quote:
1) First thing you need is the 3.1.2 firmware for the iPhone 2G, you can get it at the following link:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-7268.20091008.32pNe/iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

2) Next download redsn0w 0.9.4:
http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-iphone-os-3.1.3-firmware-with-redsn0w-0.9.4/

3) Once you`ve downloaded that, use the instructions on the following link:
http://www.tech-exclusive.com/2010/02/03/download-redsn0w-0-9-4-to-jailbreak-iphone-3-1-3/

It`s pretty easy to do with the 2G. But, if something major goes wrong, there is a good fullproof way of fixing things. So if you get stuck in a DFU loop, this is what you can do, it is a little bit long winded but everytime I`ve tried a shorter method it never seemed to work. Anyway...

1) In iTunes where you can click the Restore button, hold down the Shift button before you click it, that will let you select a firmware version to downgrade to.

2) Select the iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw you downloaded earlier, and restore the firmware to 3.1.2.

3) Once the phone has rebooted and iTunes is happy, the phone will still be locked but that is okay. Now update the firmware to the latest 3.1.3.

4) After that you will have a completely clean, but locked iPhone, and you can run redsn0w on it as before and it will be unlocked once again.

5) You can then restore your backup.

I`ve read the differences between 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 are incredibly minor and actually not worth the upgrade, so you might also want to try just using 3.1.2 and unlocking that if you find 3.1.3 gives you problems. I never had any issues with it myself.

Thanks for the reply Rob.

I have been struggling on this for the last 3 hours.
The first problem was,
I had to use itunes 10 because itunes 9 would not work on my computer.
Then the redsnow program wanted to know where the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders was, so I googled and coped them to the redsnow program folder. After all that, I thought it was going to work.
I kept the power and home button pressed down until the redsnow program said that it was uploading ramdisk, it then said it was uploading kernel.
and then it said its done, the rest of it will be done on the phone.
but the phone just stays blank, it doesn`t do any thing. When I do unplug it from the computer and power it up it just goes back to the screen with the picture of a USB cable going to a itunes.

Does any one know what I am doing wrong with this darn thing.

Thanks

You might be stuck in a DFU loop, did you try the second set of steps I listed above?

Hi Rob
Yeh, I have just now done the second set of steps and tried again.

But unfortunately the same results.

A big thank you for all your help Rob.
I managed to get it jailbroken in the end.
I could not get it to work before, because I kept putting a tick in the Already Pwned selection box .
A bit stupid of me, I know. Oh well you live and learn.
Thanks again for all your help Rob.
