How NOT to open your precious iPhone 3G...

Miles (Elite Donator) posted this on Saturday, 22nd August 2009, 05:49

So I got my factory unlocked 16GB iphone 3G a few weeks back very cheaply (£130 in the end) and am (was...) very happy with it.
Only one thing nagged me...there was dust under the glass.

So I read a few guides online showing how easy it is to open them up and decide to give it a go. All is going really well till I notice that one of the zif connectors is stuck to the underside of the screen section, and the ribbon it`s supposed to be attached to is still on the other section, now cut in half.

(Cue cold sweats and sheer panic that I have royally f[at]dekc up the phone).

I then search online to find out that this is a fairly common mistake to make (if I`d known about it I would have been more careful).

I then found out that the replacement part only costs £7.50 and there`s a place near here that sells them. Only problem is that it requires a little soldering, which I`m definitely not up to the job of doing! So now to find out if they do that as well.

On the plus side, there`s no more dust under the glass!

Ah well, we live and learn.

Managed to find a little mobile phone repair shop not far from me that should sort it for £15.
Assuming he does sort it (here`s hoping) I`ll be more than happy.

Otherwise, it`ll be £500 for a replacement :(

Cheers Chris

It`s made worse by the wife playing happily with my old iPhone (2G) model and bragging about how great it is! :D

Hey guys - bit of a cheeky one but I`ve just got back to the UK after traveling and having heard all about the iPhone from my mate I was traveling with and playing with one all weekend I`m keen as mustard to buy one ASAP!

I`ve done a quick check on the internet and on the o2 website it looks like you need to commit to a 24 month contract... Am I going to have to take a hit and commit to one or is there a better way to go about getting an iPhone?

Cheers for any advice.
Ross

Ps. I don`t suppose either of you boys have an invitation for TorrentLeech going free? My login details have been removed as I haven`t used it in a year! Mininova download speeds are killing me!

I believe O2`s contract runs out in October? Then you can get one anywhere no doubt.

Ooh, interesting.
So a Vodafone iphone might be winging my way sooner rather than later.
Excellent.

Honestly....this Storm is doing my head in to the point I leave it at home....

I know what you mean about the Blackberry!

I`ve got my work Blackberry Curve 8900...been using it for a day and it`s already doing my head in!

Just been down to the mobile phone shop and the guy reckons it should be sorted tomorrow/Weds (he`s picking up the parts tonight).

One of my mate`s recently got a Blackberry on Orange, loves the internet side, hates the phone.
Other mate has had an iPhone since soon after launch, loved it but got a call recently from Vodafone who offered him 12 month contract, hunners of minutes, unlimited text, unlimited internet and a Nokia N97 (I think it`s a 97... fold out qwerty keyboard...?) free.

Now there are 3 in his household, his, his missus, his teenage daughter, all loving them and apparently they think better than their iPhones!

seriously !! i had a play with the N97, & it just felt like a 5800 apart from the keyboard :/ not really a bad thing, as i actually like symbian, (N95 is my second favourite phone) but still no where near the iphone (imo ;) )
