kebabhead (Elite) posted this on Monday, 2nd February 2009, 09:10

Have created a seperate user account for my wife on lappy

How do I go about ensuring that when she logs in on her account that the laptop doesn`t end up downloading all the programs I have under my account

I don`t think you mean `downloading` do you?

Do you mean the shortcuts that are on the start menu & desktop?

Programs aren`t generally installed on a per-user logon basis. They`re either there, or not. Some programs allow you to limit their use to the currently logged in user when you install them, but they`re still physically available to everyone who uses the PC if you know how to access them.

OK, as Chris says, most programs are installed for all users.
However, the shortcuts (start menu & desktop) may not always be put in place for all users.

Generally they are put into:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop or
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

You can customise these by ensuring that entries you don`t want to see in your wife`s account are moved into these areas instead:
C:\Documents and Settings\{your account name}\Desktop or
C:\Documents and Settings\{your account name}\Start Menu

As Chris also mentions, it doesn`t stop your wife from actually finding and launching those applications though. Not sure why you would want to but that`s your business.

you can also have then `hidden` by default under your wifes account just by removing them from the start menu wen she is logged in then wen she next logs in it will be saved that
way for her this does not mess up your account or personal settings/programs

you could also have her use a standard user whilst you use the admin account wat this does as limits or prohibits installs without admin permission (she would`d be able to install anything with your password) hope this helps

usually most programs will ask if you want the program to be available to all users during the install, you can also alter the install path so that it installes the root files to the "my documents" section of Your user account, that way the install files are also locked for your login account only.

but if it`s just to hide that link for ladyboyheaven.com just clear your browser history :P

(not a real url btw lols :) )

well, i hope it isn`t real anyway, cos then i`ll look both dumb & perverted rofl :P
