Don`t really know how to explain what happened. Tried entering in safemode to try and use a restart point but the PC just crashes and restarts before I get anywhere near the desktop.

Hi

Just un-install it, reboot and re-install and see if that helps.

Good luck

Nick

Doesn`t help that I can`t get to the desktop to uninstall. PC crashes and restarts on reboot. I`ve started carving the gravestone for this computer . :(

If you have an XP CD you can do a repair install from that.

Instructions here

This goes through the reinstall process. Don`t panic about this - when it reboots you`ll have everything still in place.

Just craptacular....

I`ve tried booting the PC with the XP installation disk in and it just reboots itself over and over again. I`ve tried all the options , safemode , safemode with networking , reboot at the last working settings, everything. It just reboots back to the same screen .

Looks like you need to go into the BIOS and set the boot priority to CD first, HDD second and then reboot

The screen should say `press any key to boot from cd...`

A guy at work has set my PC up with a new HDD and OS but when I launch explorer I get nothing. Will I have to run the installation disc again to get the internet running again as I thought that would already be on my old hard drive which he left connected?

First of all, consider the old drive as just a data disk - most, if not all of the installed programs on it will not run - e.g. if you had MS Word on the old disk, then you`ll need to reinstall it on your new C: drive. All that`s been installed on your new system drive is just a new copy of XP. So consider your system as a brand new one with none of your programs installed.

(Just a reminder that you cannot copy programs from the old disk to the new - they need to be re-installed from your original CD`s)

If the OS is setup OK (i.e. XP with Service Pack 2+system drivers etc., etc.), then a new version of the old I.E. 6 is installed with it automatically and should work right off the shortcut. What does I.E. say when you start it up?

Do you get the IE window with toolbar up? What`s the error in the main window say?
Can you get email via your email program?

If you get no IE window, then your `guy at work` has messed up bigtime. If IE comes up with a 404 error - page not found - then it`s likely your connection settings are wrong. Sometimes `guys at work` do their rebuilds on the work LAN and leave their test settings in place - like proxy server settings. If you can, goto the windows control panel-->internet options-->connection tab then click LAN settings button - you should have the automatically detect settings ticked with no other settings. If a proxy server is set, then delete all these settings and just leave auto detect checked(ticked).

Other than this, you`ll need to check your WAN connection/IP address settings. Easy way to do this is run a CMD window(start-->run-->cmd) and at the prompt type

IPCONFIG /ALL

If you`re directly connected, you`ll see an IP address something like 80.123.4.133
if it comes up with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx (where x is 0 or 1-9), then we have DHCP problems. This is a special address your system uses when it can`t get a valid IP address from your ISP. Usually means you`re not connected to the modem/router.

I`d also check your hardware list in device manager for any yellow labels on devices - means they aren`t working.

hope this helps

Andy
