Playing DVD from a PC Drive Via DVI to LCD TV

EmilyHoward (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 5th May 2007, 08:56

..and I`m getting nothing but black screen on my TV. Picture displays fine on the PC, but I`ve tried everything I`ve got on my Pc- Power DVD, Nero Showtime, VLC PLayer- even Windows Media Player, and nothing will give me a picture. I can play back AVI or even MPEG files via winamp and get a perfect picture on my TV, so anyone got any ideas how I can do the same with DVD content?

Check the information on your graphics card. I believe many will not produce an output to TV via DVI if they are upscaling. You will need to set the graphics resolution to standard DVD output (720x576) maximum to get a TV output. The presence of a macrovision protection code on the disc is used to enable this `feature`. I was able to successfully upscale DVD output to our television using the component output from a Gainward GeForce 6600 based card. Don`t expect a dramatic improvement over a good quality standalone DVD player, although the resolution is higher the level of detail cannot be increased from the original material.

yeh but do you meant it`s just not dvd that comes out on the tv, i.e. do you get windows on the tv, but dvd is black, or is the lead connected from your pc to tv, but it`s all black?

I connect my laptop to tv, then with both on, in the advance settings of graphics card properties there is a little picture, which shows 2 screens, and I can choose to show on both, just laptop, or just tv.
