Is there a program that will compress mp3`s a bit further?

Superted (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 20th March 2007, 10:56

Our youngest daughter got a cheapy 128Mb MP3 player last week and we can only fit a few songs on it because most are 192k.

Just wondered if there is a program that will lower the quality and file size of a batch of songs so we can squeeze a few more on there for her.

Like I said it is a cheap one from Asda with the supplied headphones and she is only 5 so the sound quality is not to important.

All the best

Gerald.

I use DMP poweramp.

It`s free and I`ve never had any problems with it, if you want to convert an mp3 that`s already on the pc just right click and the choice is there to convert, so need to open up the program seperately and all that crack.

There are probably better programs but this is quite simple, quick and free, so I`ve never bothered looking elsewhere.

In fact I use it for converting to wav before I burn a cd, because I`m old school and it`s a just a habit now.

Edit- Just quickly looked back and it seems like there may be a 30day free trial limit now :/ I`m pretty sure I`ve got the installer on my home computer so if you need it PM me (thinks it`s like 4mb tops)

Yeah, there`s loads of programs that will do it - a bit of googling is all you need. I think even itunes will encode as mp3 if you happen to have it (free download). Just drop it down to 64kbps in preferences to save space.

Ah yeah, that`s what I used to used - couldn`t remember it earlier. You may have to download separate mp3 encoding software to go with it. It`s easy though.

freerip is good for rippin to mp3, free and very easy to use, you can choose the bit rate you want to encode at. :)

Back when my sister had a 128MB player, she got a stunning amount of music on it (like 80 tracks) by using .WMA at the lowest reasonable bitrate by experimenting in dB PowerAmp (or any other program).

Just checked and it will play a WMA, am I right in thinking they are smaller than an MP3 then?

There are about 30 songs that she likes and at the moment we have got 19 on there, if I can get all 30 on that would be great.

All the best

Not necessarily any smaller than mp3 files - it all depends on the rate you set. However, they certainly sound better than mp3`s at lower rates. You should be able to get away with 64kbps
