recently got a linksys wireless router.
Pc upstairs connects fine, but my laptop has an excellent connection at first but I lose connection frequently, sometimes as much as every 5 minutes.
Any suggestions of help please?
P.S does my linksys router need to be switched on at all times cos after first day turned it off and it all had to be set up again?
Thanks
Col

you`ll probably find there`s a "save" or "save all" option somewhere which will save the settings etc on the router. otherwise it`s just stored in the router`s memory and gets wiped when you turn it off.
fell foul of that one myself.

Is it a centrino chipset? I used to have similar problems, only 10` and a partition wall away from the AP with excellent signal strength, but the connection would drop very frequently.
I did a lot of searching and the problem was due to the agressive power management of the Intel wireless. I am no expert but my understanding is that if bandwidth usage is low then the wireless units are supposed to negotiate down to a lower data rate in order to reduce power consumption. Apparently the negotiation process between Intel and some other chipsets doesn`t always work. In very basic terms the Intel says I`m dropping my rate now, and doesn`t wait for acknowlegement from the other unit. The way to improve this is supposedly to adjust the power management of the Intel wireless within the Advanced properties - set it to maximum performance. This may or may not work for you, but is worth trying.

Maximun performance?
I cant find where this is.
Really annoying cant get ten minutes without having to re connect

Open Network Connections, right-click on your wireless connection and select Properties.
Top right corner of the General Tab you see a Configure button press that to access the properties of the wireless adapter. (Other ways to get here but don`t worry about that).
Now select the Advanced tab, you should see a list box of various properties that you may amend, one of these is `Power saving` or something similar (sorry but I was on the Laptop earlier and a desktop now, without a wireless card). If you select the appropriate you will see a slider appear to the right, this is what you use to adjust the performance setting.

got to the advanced bit, but nothing about power saving or anything similar.
Only something for windows firewall and internet connection sharing?

I think you are looking in the wrong place.
Open Device Manager (Right click on My Computer and select Manage). In the right hand pane you should see Network adapters, select your wireless adapter and open the properties. Now you should be able to see the Advanced tab.
RE: wireless broadband problem
set it to maximum. what does this actually do.
why when I change it from open to encrupted does it seem to go back to open next time I check it only moments later somtimes
thank you
RE: wireless broadband problem
dont think setting to max from normal is doing anything to help unfortunately.

RE: wireless broadband problem
Try turning off the card`s power management...
Start-->settings/control panel--> network connections-->right click `Wireless network connection` & select properties.
To the right of the listed adaptor is a button - `Configure` - click this.
Select the `Power Management` tab and uncheck `Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power`
Should stop any power down reconnects and dropouts.
