i think the XP3200 barton is as high as you can go, & tbh, it`s not worth the expense when you add up the slight speed benefit against the amount of cash you would spend, imo, you would be better off saving for a little while & going for a mobo & chip, there are some sweet deals going aroind for socket 939 (64 bit) chips as these are also now out of production but still a good few generations ahead of the very old socket A standard....

hope this helps..

I have the same board with a 2800+ and a gig of dual DDR RAM.

I doubt that there will be much difference between how fast my PC runs and how fast a 3200 would run. You could tweak Windows settings and overclock but I doubt overclocking is worth it.

My PC runs fast enough for my needs and it is only the GFX card that lets it down. My Sammy R50 laptop runs games better.

Cheers

what`s the latest AMD chipset if the 939 is now out of production?

I`m also still using a socket A MB and want to upgrade. only problem is, if I go for a brand new MB, I guess I`ll need new RAM and GFX Card as well as a CPU?

how fast do the 939 chips go and what`s a good price for them?

cheers

the 940 took over from the 939, but the 940 has now been replaced by the socket AM2, aparently there is very little difference between 939 & 940, & the only real difference between 939/940 & AM2 is that AM2 supports DDR2 memory, as a budget upgrader 939 is currently great value for money, especialy if you want to re-use your standard ddr memory rather than buying the more expensive DDR2, most (maybe even all) skt 939 boards support dual core cpu`s right up to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800

bearing in mind that your old system would almost certainly have been running AGP gfx, & i think all skt 939 mobo`s run pci Express, so if your a gamer you would need a new gfx card.

hope this helps....

cheers ogster. I`ll have a look into that. It all starts adding up once you factor in getting a new GFX card too.

can you recommend a skt 939 board with semi-decent on board graphics that I could use as a stop-gap until I can afford a new gfx card too?
