Google annoyance

xfg (Elite Donator) posted this on Friday, 15th September 2006, 21:14

My homepage is set at google.com because I *want to use .com* - but since yesterday it`s been automatically switching me to .co.uk. I don`t like the .co.uk results layout, and I definitely don`t like being forced to use it!

I know a few years ago this happened and there was a way I could amend the URL - google.com/*** (where *** is whatever I had to write) and Google would ignore the location and not kick me off the .com site.

Anyone know what *** was?

If you`re using Google search bar check it`s settings.

Nope, using Firefox and Opera with no additional toolbars.

Edit: Fixed - I changed it to google.com/ncr in my settings.

No, it`s OK - it the regional redirection script from Google. The /ncr bit I found out again and added stands for No Country Redirect and means I can just use google.com without being "helpfully" redirected to the UK site.

It`d be rather sad if a hijacker went to the trouble to write the code and enable it to get past my security... and then just have it direct me to google.co.uk. :D

Go into Tools > Options and change the homepage URL to http://www.google.com/ncr and it`ll behave. :)
