Was trying to connect a usb dvd burner and my external usb hard drive to my old pc but only one or the other is recognised? When I look in my computer, but if I connect my mp3 player as well (usb hub) that is recognised as another removable drive.
Why does the dvd and the hard drive want to share the same drive letter and conflict?
Any help appreciated.
Please explain the symptoms of why you cannot access both drives and why you think they are sharing the same drive letter (or maybe you are assuming they are sharing the same drive letter).
If they are indeed sharing the same drive letter you can reassign them in Administrative Tools, Computer Management then Disk Management.

Me neither.
Use Windows help for how to change the assigned drive letter (too hungover to reboot PC into W98 to verify how its done & then post it here)..
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
Yep not available in Win98! Oops!
In the case of Win 98 I probably won`t be able to help if the solution is not a case of reassigning drive letters.
Hi

Thanks to all who replied,
I am running my old computer through a kvm switch with my XP side by side and was just going to try and use it to burn itunes etc.
Managed to change the drive allocation letter in Device manager but soon as USB hard drive was plugged in also it would not recognise both the dvd burner and hard drive at same tome.
Thinking I may invest in a new wi-fi laptop with dvd burner and forget the old stuff......
It just seems a shame as it cost a fortune a few years ago!!!
Ah that seems like you may not have enough power from your USB ports. A powered hub should fix it. You could "borrow" one from Argos to try it out and if it works buy a cheaper one online.
