Thinkpad System disk

Mike J T (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd February 2006, 16:59

Purchased Thinkpad just before Xmas. The system "disk" are effectively held on a partition on the hard drive. All the pre-installed software etc is held here. Part of IBM instructions is to make a system disk using an actual routine within the start menu. No problem with this.

Was wondering if anyone who has done this can advise how much CDs the process takes as I notice the partioned section takes up about 8Gb of disk space (assuming this is the reason my 40Gb disk is only showing 32Gb.

Mike

normally when you begin the process of creating the system disk(s) you will
be advised how many disks will be required.

if the drive burns DVD media, i`d be inclined to use those rather than loads of
CD`s.

tbh, loads of companies are now doing this, which puts the onus on the consumer
to ensure that they have appropriate tools in the event of a serious system crash.
personally, i`m not too keen on the idea and as such have avoided any manufacturer
who can`t supply a pre-made recovery or full windows disk.

The machine has a DVD writer so I was waying up the additional speed of CD to the additional space of DVD.

I just bought a Thinkpad a few weeks back and it took 7 CDs to backup.

Thanks Harry66

Just had a quick look and think I`ll have to spend some time giving it a good going over.

Was actually expecting about 10-12 CDs so I suppose 7 aint that bad. How long did it take?

I was doing it over a evening - laptop in one room and me in another occasionally checking up on it - so it took a few hours but I expect if you sat there continously feeding the CDs as soon as it asks them it might take around 2hrs at a guess.

I think it does some serious compressing - hence not as many discs required as expected.

I have bought an external DVD writer and did another backup using DVDs and it the whole lot fitted on 2 DVDs and took around 1.5-2hrs - cant remember exactly
