Not having a divx dvd player I have been having to convert avi files to burn as a dvd,
I have tried a couple of different ways with different programs, some are very time consuming and need 8gig of free disk space, who can recommend the best way?
Usually I will be using 5-7 seperate avi files to make the dvd.
Regards

How much do you value your time? Because conversions like this are a long laborious
ballache.
You can pick up a Divx dvd player for 20-30 quid nowadays. Honestly, its totally worth it.
But if you dont fancy getting one http://www.videohelp.com/ is the best place on the intarwebs for any video related malarky. I even managed to work out a way of sorting out OGM files, which are a total pain in the arse.
You`re solid gold.......and I`ll see you in hell.....
What im listening to (if youre interested)
I use DivxtoDVD
It`s fast, much faster than anything I know (about 2 hrs) It`ll calculate and compress the files to fit on a DVD. You End up with a VIDEO_TS Folder you can Burn in nero

I think it all comes down to preference.
I can`t notice any real difference in time between Nero Vision Express (plus you get a menu), DVD Santa, TMPGEnc or divxtodvd. In fact, using divxtodvd is the one where I occasionally get some blockiness and a few green squares..

wow. in a year of using it, that`s never happened to me. I started using it because nero would take 3 hours and divxtodvd would take 45 mins.
It`s all down to preference as you say.

I asked a question like this a few weeks ago and jamesL directed me to divxtodvd and I have never looked back since! Im converting my own avi files to VIDEO_TS now due to this software and making my own DVD`s with menu`s and chapters using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 :)
The above couple bits of software are surprisingly so easy to use and the resulting completed DVD`s are professional yet personal looking and theres something satisfying about that! :D
As for SJ getting blokiness and a few green squares well I dont know whats happening there!! :o
Andy,
If you`re converting and doing menus, chapters etc, give NeroVision Express a look..
I`m not at all suggesting divxtodvd produces a film full of blockiness. Just very occasionally - could (and probably is) be a co-incidence.
I`ve probably done as much, if not more video conversion from one format to another than most people and certainly divxtodvd is up there for ease of use, speed and quality. But people seem to knock Nero (and Norton for that matter..) `cos it`s `fashionable` but the newer version of NVE really does produce some impressive results. The real bonus being you don`t do the conversion, wait for it to finish and then add the new folder to another package etc. You do it all upfront and leave it to it. :) Nero also gives options for quality like 2 pass encoding etc. which you may have had on James?
Anyway, shouldn`t this be moved to PC`s forum?? ;)

Cheers for the info SJ!
To be honest Im only very very new to this sort of thing with regards to making my own DVD`s. Its just that the software jamesL guided me to has done me very well and I havent tried anything else at all! Once I get the hang of all this converting lark I`ll delve onto other possible software!

Way ahead of yeh partner lol!! :p
glad to be of service Andy_R ! :)
I`m knocking Nero`s DVD production because of the fact that it died on me. Yup, a bought official version`s DVD creation functions died on me. I don`t know why. But after a year of producing great DVD`s with it, the encoder stopped working, discs would not be recognised in players. After that I turned elsewhere for my DVD production needs. And using those products I got the same (if not better) results FASTER than Nero ever did it. The one thing Nero has going for it is that it`s really easy to produce amazing DVDS. Unfortunately it`s on the slow side and my version broke.
I still use Nero to Burn discs though. That it does amazingly well.
At the end of the day, find something that works for you, and if you like it , tell others.
