New Imac

Keldus (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 14th January 2006, 21:11

I read that the new imac has a dual processor but at 1300 quid it sounds too good to be true because some video editing programs such as adobe after effects recommend multiple processors to run it. i was wondering if it was wise to use an imac for after effects or am i better off with a power mac. any advice would be really appeciated.

Yes, the new iMac has an Intel Core Duo processor so it`s dual-processor and very, very fast! But I would wait until Adobe bring out a new version of After Effects as it won`t be Intel ready.

After Effects is still PowerPC only on Mac, and Adobe needs to bring out a Universal Binary version which will be Intel/PowerPC native and give you the best performance.

If you try running After Effects on the new iMac it will run a realtime translation app called Rosetta, which will impact performance a little.

Stick to your Power Mac until Adobe release a new version of After Effects, which should hopefully be in the summer.

HTH

Keen to have a play with one of these... are they available in retailers yet? (Not got a "proper" Apple store near.)

These should be available in the next couple of weeks at Apple Stores, though not sure how long it would take to become available at resellers. Maybe the same time?

Bear in mind that other than the os and iLife `06, there`s not really anything else Intel native as yet. Apple will release its Pro Apps (Final Cut etc) by the summer on Intel, and all the big publishers will follow suit.

I`m not really wanting one for power use - just like having a Mac in the house (amongst a couple of PCs & Laptops) Current one is a G3 fruit flavoured iMac running OS9 and it`s really time to retire it and give OSX a go. So iLife and internet stuff will do nicely - as long as it`s happy with fairly basic photo editing that`ll do.

Had really been hoping a replacement for the iBook would be launched by now as that would fit in more with what I use it for and the fact I do most of my surfing sitting in front of the TV, although a media-centre style Mac Mini would have a huge pull. The £929 17" iMac seems a decent buy but I`m gonna hold off to see wht the mini and iBooks turn into with the intel changes.

Ta for the info - will have a look in Jon Lewis in a few weeks time.

I`ve had a play on the new iMac Intel at the Apple Store and I can`t really tell the difference between this and the G5 in terms of raw performance. I think time will tell when Apple bring out native versions (Universal Binary) of its Pro Apps like Final Cut Pro. Then I`d like to play with it!

Of course, I`d love a Power Mac quad...!
