That is because plugins have been installed which are not installed/uninstalled correctly or badly written or it can be caused by malware from people accessing unsavoury websites (how many times have I warned people to stop that) which is by far the most common cause or from opening unknown executable attachments via email. You can try disabling them in Internet Options, Programs and Add-ons but it is not easy to work out which ones to disable and which ones not to disable. This option will not always work anyway and it will probably be easier to reinstall Internet Explorer which is tricky and I think requires a registry setting or to perform a Windows repair install.

i just had a similar problem due to firefox making a grab for world domination :)

IE competely disapeared from the pc i used my windows disc to "install optional components" & it worked fine, tho if it`s a malware/spyware prob you would obviously need to cure the problem as well as the symptem :)

I`ve had a similar problem for the last 8 weeks or so. IE just locks up every hour or two. You restart it and all is well again for a while. It seemed to co-incide with a group of security fixes they put out via Windows Update around that time. I`ve un-installed them and re-installed them (the updates), but it`s still the same.

A scout round on Google finds a fair few posts from people reporting the same problem, so I`m convinced there`s been something wrong with one of the security fixes they issed. I don`t normally bother when it asks if you want to repot things (do they listen anyway), but I have been bombarding them with reports from this, in the hope they`ll cotton on if other people are also reporting the errors, there`s something wrong and issue a fix for the fix so to speak...lol. :)

All was well until those updates, and I`m meticulous about keeping my PC clean of spyware and such like.
