Thats half the problem IMV, your system is probably not that secure if its recieving spam popups. Take a look here & use the Shields Up tests & read the advice for checking your systems actual security.

I hope you are using a firewall, spyware detection & AV protection on your machine as a first line of defence.

I can`t speak for the value of "Registry Mechanic" in itself, but I would guess you were prompted to install\run this as a result of the popups. As a result I would treat this product & results with suspicion.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

If you are receiving popups from Messenger advertising antispyware, registry cleaners, etc then I don`t recommend that they should be installed. A popup cannot scan your computer for problems so if it says you have spyware, etc, please install our new super-duper software it is rubbish - that is NOT to say your PC hasn`t got spyware or registry problems though.

You can turn off these annoying and ridiculous popups by switching off the Messenger service in Control Panel, adminsitrative tools, services.

Or Alternatively, block port 137 from your firewall.

if its this registry mechanic then its okay.
What sort of messenger popups were they ? If you get a popup while on the internet that says you computer is infected, running too slow, has a corrupted registry and its not from software on your pc such as the antivirus system then ignore it as its just an attempt to get you to buy unnecessary software you don`t need and in a fair number of cases will be spyware masquerading as protection software of some sorts. Rather than click on such popups please send me all your money as i am a much more worth recipient :)

Easily solved. Bin MSN messenger and get Trillian. Your PC will thank you.

And maybe give you a kiss.
