Router probs?

dvd_vicar (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 20th October 2005, 09:25

A couple of months ago I purchased a Belkin ADSL router/modem and LAN card from Ebuyer. I have had problems connecting from day one but thought it was down to incorrect setup coupled with my lack of knowledge.

A couple of months on, problem has got gradually worse, till I am now at the stage of being unable to connect from a web page. What would happen originally was, I would need to access the router web home page, then connect and disconnect a few times till I could open a web page or send/receive using Outlook. The number of time I needed to do this has steadily increased, until it got to the stage where it was impossible to connect at all.

Long conversations with Belkin tech support and much changing of settings eventually got us to the stage that the ISP server (UK Online) was not recognising a named address but would connect using an IP address. So of course it then became the ISP's fault.

UK Online checked out the server and exchange - all ok. Suggested I try the USB modem originally supplied by them and guess what - I now have no problems connecting.

Downside is, her indoors can't use her new laptop to access internet as she has become used to over the last two months!

Sorry for all the preamble, my question is: where would your bets go as to where the fault is? I think router but don't want to go through all the rigmarole of Ebuyers RMA procedure to find they think its ok. Could the card be causing problems?

Ta muchly
Nick

OK the long and the short of it is that it can only be a router problem as when you try a different router (the one you were given from your ISP) it works. Therefore, the broadband is working and so are your Internet Connection settings.
The question now turns to "why will the router not work when my old modem will?"
Its only a quick thought but possibly could be because of the new version of itunes that was released last month. On PC`s it knocks out the DNS of the router and renders the router temporarily unuseable. Only solution I have found for this is a reboot of the router. If your leaving the router on permanently the DNS wouldn`t reset (if this is indeed the answer) and therefore would remain unuseable.
If the above is off the mark can you isolate to certain occassions when the connection fails? Can you ping the router from either the laptop or PC? Are there any error codes?
Has it got worse since installing a certain program?
I am assuming your meaning that the router is wireless?
