Page 1 of No audio after unplugging CD-in cable

Just wondering if anyone can help with my audio problem please.

Ive got a SiS chipset in my PC which has onboard graphics and audio. Obviously the graphics were no good for gaming so i bought and installed a Radeon 9800 fitted with an arctic cooler.

About and inch down from my AGP slot is a cd-in port which had a wire running from it and looked to be feeding a headphones and mic socket on the front of my pc. Because of where that is i had to unplug it so the gfx card would fit as the cd-in cable was sitting where the back of the arctic cooler switch needed to be.

Now like i said that cable just seems to feeding the headphone socket at the front of my PC unplugging should effect my rear audio ports but it has. I can`t get any sound unless it`s plugged in.

Does anyone know of a possible work around for this?

what type of mother board have you got? Have you got the manual?
It maybe the lead that send the sound info to the soundcard in the mobo from the cd rom etc. need to check with your manual.
Is there anyway you can plug the lead back in AND leave the arctic cooler in place?

Thats what i thought at first but i usually just get my cd-rom sounds through the IDE cable to my MB. Not sure what kind of motherboard i have. Is there anyway of finding that out in my control panel.

Theres no way i can have the lead in aswell as the cooler. When i try the card wont sit in correctly and i bends the metal clasp holding the cooler switch in place.

I am not sure exactly what you are saying. It sounds like you are saying that unplugging the front sound connectors renders the rear connectors useless? If that is the case then the solution has nothing to do with your motherboard but to do with the audio software installed for the sound chip. You need to go into the audio software (usually accessible via an icon on the bottom right of the task bar) and specify sound to go out of the rear sound ports.

Now, if you also want sound to go out of the front ports as well as the rear there are usually options to allow for this. I suspect that you have a 5.1 sound card (as they are ubiquitous these days) and the front ports in conjunction with the rear ports allow for the connections to a 5.1 setup. If you don`t have 5.1 speakers and you want to disable the front ports then you need to use the afore-mentioned software to specify a 2 speaker (or possibly 2.1 setup if you have a subwoofer) and route the connections to the back.

If you unplug the the cable to front audio ports from the motherboard then usually you need to jumper certain pins on that motherboard connector to enable the on-board rear ports. You really do need the motherboard manual to check which pins you should jumper

Thats very much mate,thats sorted the problem. I didnt have any jumpers so i nipped to my local PC repair shop and the bloke gave me a couple from a knacked board.
