TomTom Licensing Question?

flyingmonkey (Elite) posted this on Monday, 12th September 2005, 21:53

Hi

Hypothetical question:

If I knew someone with a genuine TomTom 3 disk that had already been activated could I also install and activate it and then pay to have it upgraded to TomTom 5 and subscribe for traffic services, etc?

This is a completely hypothetical question and I am asking it simply for work related licensing purposes.

Thanks

Nick

I think you can use a single installation disc on as many PCs as you like as long as you purchase a separate license for each user, then you can upgrade as much as you like

hypothecially speaking..

What if you didn`t buy a seperate licence for each user / PC?

once you have upgraded you can no longer get updates for the old version so your mate would miss out on updates in theory

If you want to come after me you`ll find me in Newport Pagnell but be warned I know karate, Judo, Kung-fu and several other dangerous words

How would that work, do you have to enter the product code to upgrade and then it locks it?

Basically the CD wouild come with a licence code, or `key`. Theoretically you can usethe cd and key on as many computers as you like, but once one of the computers connect to the internet to upgrade, the upgrade website `registers` that `key`, fixing it to one PC. if another PC connects to the upgrade website, it recognizes the identical key and blocks the new user. In some cases it also blocks the original user, as it assumes he/she`s giving out their expensive software for free
