Whats the best way to send a message between two pcs which are networked. I know can do this with msn et all, but there must be a non web based way?
also to view webcam on other pc and just chat.
1 pc is upstairs and the other down stairs. win xp pro on both.

Try C:\Program Files\NetMeeting\conf.exe

Go through the setup, and make sure both PCs have it running.
Then type the IP address of one of the PCs in the top box and press the phone button.
The other one should receive an incoming `call`.

That`s about it.

If you have XP service pack 2 installed you will neet to enable the netsend message service as it is disabled by default in SP2.

Or use the user name.

I use net send to "worry" my halfwits if I am feeling playful, especially if they try to circumvent the Helldesk (see below).

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

I used to love freaking people out with that one at work.

How do you go about enabling net send if it is dissabled under SP2?

LOL, I love net send. When I worked in my last permie job I used it to baffle my `manager`. Insults flying all over the place. Also useful for asking the office girlie to pop down the shops.

Start the Messenger service. You dont need an app to do it, it takes all of 30 seconds. Either do it through the control panel in the Services, or even go to a DOS window and type Net Start Messenger. In contol panel you can set it to Automatic so it always starts at bootup.
