Anyone using TomTom 3, or have any other PDA advice?

Superted (Elite) posted this on Monday, 30th May 2005, 22:01

After a lot of consideration and postponing, I finally ordered a Mitac Mio 168 and TomTom 3 from globalpositioningsystems, should be coming tomorrow. Just got a few questions.

I know TomTom 5 is due to be released soon but fed up with waiting for it and the release date being constantly pushed back, told by gps that you will be able to upgrade to 5 for around £30 (49 Euros) when it is finaly released so bit the bullit and went for it.

I was going to get a HP Ipaq 2750 with TT5 Bluetooth, have had £600 burning a hole in my secret money hiding place for 3 months now :/ . I decided to go for the much cheaper Mitac in the end and have booked a long weekend in Pontins with the change for me, Sarah and the girls :D .

All I was wondering, is there any problem with changing memory cards, it comes bundled with a 256Mb SD card but am thinking if upgrading this to a 512Mb/1Gb, want to have all of UK maps on the card to save messing around and speed camera database/games etc. Or would 256Mb be enough?

Have checked on the TomTom site but there is no info on there, the nearest I can find is it saying you have to activate your TomTom and can only do this once, to stop you installing it on multiple PDA`s. Doesn`t mention anything about swapping/upgrading cards.

Other thing is when I eventualy get version 5, I am hoping to give my copy of 3 to my dad, currently using the Falk Navigator package from Lidl. Is there a way around the activation?

I did Email TomTom last Monday but still waiting for a response!

And finaly, are there any (free/cheap) must have programs/games for PDA`s and where can I get them from?

All the best

Gerald.

I am assuming you are talking about GPS here, I always use Mapololis for their Palm\Pocket PC\Smartphone software & free demo maps (ever the skinflint). :D

If not I can`t advise, but have many a good game\emulator for the Palm OS as demo`s that can help kill a long flight.

Google could be a good start. :)

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

The entire UK Map on Tomtom3 take up 106mb or thereabouts (the speeed camera database is quite small too so won`t impact on space) so a 256 card is fine but if you can get a 1GB card anyway you will clearly be able to fit more games/apps/movies/music etc on it without the need to swap cards around.

There is also a workaround for transferring it to someone elses PDA but it`s involves illegally copying 3 files from your PDA Windows folder to someone elses :-(

I`ve got the Mio 138 with Tom Tom 3, bought from the same place...highly recommended all round.

Be aware - the user manual doesn`t actually tell you how to get the GPS working...check HERE for the elusive hidden step, the very bottom entry and the 6th one from the bottom too.

Any questions let me know, I may be able to help.

Thanks for the replies everyone, just got home and it is here sat next to me still in its City Link wrapper!

Am absolutely starving so just wolfing down some left over chicken parts before tearing the packing to pieces :D

It is mainly games that I was after, to waste away the boring hours sat in hotels and to keep me out of the bar!

Oh Julian, just wondered if you knew where I could get some screen protectors from? have seen them all over the place for HP`s but can`t seem to find any for the Mio. Also how long does the battery tend to last for? Having a few problems fitting the car mount allowing enough room to get the mio in and out and for the charger cable. Be handy if the charger cable wasn`t really needed.

All the best

Ger.

Ebay`s probably best for screen protectors although you`ll probably find generic PDA ones rather than Mio-specific...

The battery is "ok", lasted me a couple of long train journeys when I used it as an MP3 player before I got my iPod but now we only use it in the car with the charger in.

I know exactly what you mean about the holder/charger and space...it`s a bit fiddly unless you want it stuck halfway up the windscreen :D
