I have an orange contract with 1000 free minutes per month off peak. Can I put a cap on my account to prevent me making any more calls than this so I don`t pay any more than my monthly line rental.

I would ring Orange & ask them.
Tell the 1000mins are more than enough & yhis is a safety precaution if the phone get lost or stolen.
The catch I see is that if you needed to make a call at peaktime.
Rathe than limit yourself to not being able to use your phone if you need to, as mentioned above, how about using the counters function if your phone his it (most do I think).
My Sagem MY-X7 and all previous phones have a counters section in the menus. One counts GPRS data used, and the other counts call time. If you reset the call counter each month on your anniversary date, you can keep track of how many minutes you`d used that month.
The only downsides you`d have is having to have the discipline to stop yourself using it once you`re hit you 1000 minutes, and also take into account it counts total phone call time, this`ll include incoming calls too, so it`s only a general guide.
You can always phone orange services every so often and check how many minutes you have left and when the 1000 are gone stop using your phone!!
RE: mobile call spending limit
I`m with BT mobile and they send me a text for each five pound over the limit I`m over so then I justt have to be careful after I recieve the first message. It seems to work quite well for me.
