Broadband Connection Question

0A1B2C (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 26th May 2005, 23:06

As I do not have broadband yet and am becoming a little tired of dial-up I have finally decided to do something about it.

The broadband supplier I will (or may) be using is Kingston Communications (I have no other choice).

Now, KC say that my computer has to be within 3m of a fixed phone socket otherwise their ASDL service may not work. As I don`t have a fixed phone socket within 3m I am currently using an extension lead of about 4-5m.

With the extension lead I get an average connection speed of around 44.0kbps (56K modem).

Would I likely be able to get broadband using the 4-5m extension?

Thanks,
Adam

Don`t know about KC but my broadband works fine and runs at full speed on a 10 M extension from the main BT master socket.

You could also use a wireless router that is connected within 3 M of your master socket and send a wireless signal to your PC.

Yup, with broadband, extention sockets make no difference at all. I use mine via an extention upstairs socket. Works fine. no loss of speed at all. And then I run that signal back downstairs for my Xbox.. which works fine too!

Ditto on all the above. My Computer is miles away from the telephone point and works just fine. I think this is an "old wives tale" (sexism) that BT keep churning out to cover themselves if, for some reason or other, it doesn`t work.

Its regarding signal degredation and the accepted length which the signal starts to encounter `noise`. It does start to degrade after that, not not noticably until you hit a certain length (not sure off the top of my head, its been a while since i did my networking class). So keep reeling ou the cable until you notice a signal loss.

Anyway, this is the Broadband equivalent of `Warning: Hot` on a cup of McDonalds coffee. You can ignore it if you want but dont say they didnt warn you.

Dear Gamesmaster,

My Friend keeps talking about `Girls`.
What is `Girls` and is it XBox compatable?

Thanks for your replies...

So I should be OK with a good quality 4-5m extension cable?

Its sounds like KC is just trying to con me out of having them install a new fixed phone line that would probably cost me a small fortune.

Thanks,
Adam

the distance inside ur house, ie the length of cable u use - becomes irrelevant since it is actually the TOTAL distance ur pc is from the exchange u are connected to, usually it will be withing 3 km of ur house, much further and u WILL see a degradation of signal, so u need to find out which exchange u are conneced to and distance,
try using
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/index.php
to locate ur exhange, this site will also tell u if there are any other prviders in ur area or any due to install equip,.

it is worth noting that the nearer u are to ur exchange the greater the signal u can recieve, Bulldog ( cable and wireless) are at the mo offering up to 4 meg for what bt/kc want with a max signal being 8meg over ur twisted copper pair

Unfortunately I am not able to take advantage of the Exchange Search feature `The Broadband Resource` offers as I do not have a BT telephone number.

In Kingston Upon Hull we do not have BT. Instead we have Kingston Communications, or KC (http://www.kcom.com). If you were ever to visit Hull you would likely notice our white, rather than red, phone boxes.

Having our own telecommunications company does have it`s advantages but also carries some major disadvantages, like monoplising. KC clearly tends to take advantage of this yet denies it.

Broadband from KC will cost me £39.99 for the modem (or connection) followed by £18.99 per month, for which I will get a connection speed of just 256Kb/ps.

There are no other broadband ISPs in KC`s network area, therefore they can do pretty much whatever they like.

Regards,
Adam

Haha Kingston Communications they are the ones that provide the internal phones at Manchester Uni halls costs a small fortune to use unless you manage to swipe a few of the £1 cards you get at beginning of term ;)
