Help with networking

lis_27 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 23rd March 2005, 21:03

Can someone give me some help...
I have 2 desktop P.C. and 1 wireless Laptop and am currently on AOL. I have just subscribed to AOL GOLD BROADBAND so we can all connect to the internet in my home but have no idea what to do. I have been told to buy a router but thats it. I have checked some sites on the net but still confused. I want to set it up easily with no wires. Can someone tell me what i need to buy and how to set up.
Thanks in advance

Hi

not too familiar with AOL (read "at all") but know of issues with their
intenet service and networking.

have a look at this on ebuyer, there are users who have set it up
with AOL and have it working. obviously, you will have to purchase another USB or
PCI wireless adaptor, but it appears that this item will work.

I`m thinking about going with the BT Voyager 2100. Does anyone have suggestions for Adaptors? I want to go the USB route. I have one PC and one Laptop.

Hi

i have various wireless USB adaptors and PCI cards ranging from 11Mbps to 54Mbps.
for regular internet browsing, the elcheapo USB adaptors from ebuyer work fine.
but if you want to share files between pc and lappy, i`d suggest going for a faster
54Mbps adaptor.

If your laptop`s a reasonably modern one, there`s a fair chance it might have a wireless network card in it already. It should be on your specs somewhere...

I use a Linksys 54G wireless router with a Linksys USB adaptor on my PC. My wife`s laptop has a built-in 811.b/g adaptor, so no worries there. It all works fine with NTL Broadband.

Sorry to hear that, splintercell. Hope the weekend goes well for you.

PS I decided to stay safe and buy everything from BT. :)
Thanks for all your help.
