*Eight*?

The phone number is stored on the sim - so there`ll be a new number with the new sim (should solve problem if it was due to a faulty original sim). The phone number will either be on the main part of the card you push the sim out of, or it`ll be in the phonebook settings of the new phone.

How much did you pay for it? Actually, it doesn`t matter how much you paid - if it was faulty/damaged when you bought it, take it back. Please don`t spend more money, just go to the shop, no matter how much you hate doing it, be firm but polite, and either get your money back or get it replaced.

All the best.

Kallis

Totally agree with Beth 58%er. Take the phone back to the shop. Point out to them that its faulty. Let them sort it out. They`ll simply send it back to the manufacturers for a refund. After two weeks, if they offer to repair it, refuse and request either a new phone or a refund.
