External Hard Drive...

Could anybody recommend a good external hard drive, it will be mainly used for backup purposes. Maximum 160gb, and I don`t want to spend a fortune.

Hi

You could make up your own ,just buy a external case [ maplins ] [ plastic /or alum ] and any size drive you like [ just get the correct sockets on the drive? ] to match the case.
The cases come with the drivers.
Or

Checkout morgancomputers.com and you will find some freecom made ones.

bye

Hmmm, just checked the Maplin site, they have a casing but it cost £39.99, if I add the price of the HD it will probably be cheaper to buy an external drive already all made no?

The problem I have got is that my PC run Windows98 (Not SE) and I have got to make sure to buy an external drive which comes with the right driver.

Thanks anyway

I`ve had a Maxtor 80gig external HD for about 3 weeks now, cost me £78 from Dabs (inc. del)

I`m running win98se, and it`s plugged into usb1.1, slower than usb2.0 but okay for what i want, i.e. backing up.
had to get update 1394 for win98 from microsoft knowledge base and install before installing the Maxtor driver, other than that it`s fine. didn`t like the retrospect software that comes with it tho, so took that off. :)
Have seen a 160gig HD in Aldi for £70 (Gericom), don`t know how good they are tho :)

I bought the iomega HDD 160GB as recommended by this site and been delighted with it. The most plug and play device I have ever bought.

Just don`t install Norton Ghost which comes with it

Depends if you want it `now` but Aldi are pretty good on external hard drives-I bought mine from there last year for (I think) 69 quid-it`s Gericom branded-works on either USB 2.0 or firewire. Excellent bit of kit- came in really handy when we visted friends before Christmas-I wanted to take up some home movies and some music for my friend-just copied them onto the external hard drive and took that with us-a lot easier than carting the whole PC and a lot simpler than taking a hard drive out!

Now just need to get a case to make a huge external storage box. Anyone got any recommendations for what to use?

How about this one from ebuyer for £8.44. I know a few people dont like ebuyer, but I have used them on many an occasion and never had any problems.
