Is it possible to scan old type slides with a normal scanner in any way or do you need a special scanner
Thanks
you can usually get an attachment that fits to the scanner and allows you to load slides, my last 2 scanners had this (one of them actaully had the "dongle" with it in the box, a mustec, dunno the model tho) unfortunatly whilst this seemed common on older scanners, it`s getting rare with newer ones :(

Yeah - look for HP models that come with a TAM - Transparency Adaptor Module (or something like that!!!)
yep it`s a TMA - probably the french way of saying it :D
(anyone remember 2001?):-)

IIRC you can make one, it`s done with two mirrors or summat at angles, and reflect the scanner light back through the slide.
dunno if it works on negatives, slides or both, but a mate did it years ago before the adapters started appearing.
I`ll check the in store units in a day or so to try and get you a model number that has one, can`t see why it won`t work on any scanner if you have an adapter, so you might be able to order it as a "spare" for one of them.

Try the PCWorld junkpiles (managers specials etc) and ask instore for TMA - only one problem - you`ll need a compatible printer with an interface socket.... :(
The `Blue Peter` version is fairly easy to knock up - just a piece of A4 black card with a cut out slot the size of your slides in the middle (cut parallel to the scanning head i.e. along the shortest dimension, roughly in the centre of the A4 Card). Mount your slides in a holder - just a strip of card the size if the slot with the back cut out so that you can see through the slides. Then all you need is a backlight source that goes through a diffuser - milky white opaque bit of plastic will do or a smallish strip light(8" or so).
.
Stick the A4 card on the scanning glass, lay your exactly fitting slide holder inside the slot and light from the rear. Then scan & Robert`s your father`s brother... :D
Remember the heat factor when backlighting or you`ll toast your slides!

If you have a lot of slides to scan then you might want to obtain a dedicated slide / film scanner. Jessops do one currently on offer, as it was this time last year, at £80. I bought this model last year and it works very well with both 35mm slides and negative film strip. Resolution is 1800dpi which is equivalent to a 4M pixel camera. The software supplied with it is adequate for most basic purposes.

If that`s the one with the grey lid, and slightly angled front to make it look nice n funky, that`s the one I was trying to remember in this thread (they were about £50 to £80 about a year and a half ago...?)
If it aint, then I`m still puggled :D

Any of the Epson scanners with Photo (ie Epson Perfection 1260 Photo) in their model name. These are packaged with adapters for various film sizes, negative strip holders, single slide holders, etc. Great software bundled with it and top quality piece of kit.
I was recommended these by a friend, who is still a friend.......says it all.
