Page 1 of Pc spec for DVD burner

I have a 533 celeron processor. Is this up to the job of dvd burning?

I am looking at adding 256 ram to help.

Any advise is much appreciated

The faster the CPU and the more memory the better is usually the case but in all honesty the 533 allied to the extra 256 Meg memory should be up to the task of backing up DVD/CD`s.
As you mentioned, speed is not the most important issue for you and with that in mind as long as you are willing to let the system do its work without using the system for any other jobs like word , excel etc you should not have any problems.
If you are new to burning then try out a couple of DVD/RW to get the hang of things and then if all goes well it should be plain sailing.

Regarding a £300 base unit I would probably go for something like the following.

You should have no problems with DVD burning as such. My 2nd machine is a Celeron 400, 256MB RAM, 60gig hard drive and I can burn DVDs on that just fine.

I wouldn`t attempt any kind of video encoding on it (e.g. DIVX to DVD or vice versa), because it`ll probably take forever! It should be fine for backing up data and copying DVD movies, though.

Thanks for the advise. I think i`ll try upgrading my current pc and if it proves too slow or I decide I would like to do some editing then i can always reuse the hard drive and the re-writer in a new build.
