XP Harware Wizard Problem

PDK (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 6th August 2004, 11:56

Hope someone can help with this one.

I cannot use the Add Hardware Wizard (or indeed access the add/remove hardware function within control panel) in Windows XP Home. Each time I try to, a message comes up saying that you can only install one device at a time (despite me not actually trying to install a device). I am now fully up-to-date with windows downloads, which I had thought to be the problem as I have only recently connected this particular PC to the Internet via Broadband.

I know it isn`t a huge problem as I can add and remove hardware easily enough using the hardware profile through `My Computer`, but any tips would be welcome, as I really can`t be bothered re-installing XP (installed originally by company who built PC) for such a little matter .

Did this error just start when you connected you PC via broadband? Are you using a USB connection to your cable/adsl modem? It sounds like the install for that might not have finished. I`d try deleting that out of device manager then re-installing the drivers for that.

Be aware that some usb devices like you to install the drivers before you install the hardware.
