As above both are in the same room. PC is quite new but my Sony HiFi is prehistoric. It does have AUX red/white connections though.

RE: How do I connect my PC to my HiFi??
is this for inputing to the pc or outputing to the hifi?
outputing should be easy. connect from the speaker socket on the pc to the aux connections on the hifi and anything played on the pc should be sent throught the hifi.
inputing i think is imposible with out a caputre card of some type. i have a belkin usb capture box that i`ve connected to a video and also to a turn table.
took a bit of fiddling with settings, but did manage to caputre reasonable sound quality through the turn table.
If you meant you want mp3s playing on your pc to come out of your stereo, the above suggested by dnick has worked for me in the past.
inputting, so if you were playing a tape on your stereo, it would go into your pc for example if you wanted to mp3 an old tape you own, is almost as easy!
you just need a lead with 2 male ends, looks like a headphone plug on each end (don`t know proper name, sorry!) plug that into headphone socket on your stereo, other end into microphone socket on your pc, which will be next to the socket for plugging in speakers.
I`ve done that works ok, just remember to set teh vol on the stereo to a sensible level, then use windows to alter playback, cos if you keep messing with vol on stereo, it will effect recording on PC.
If you want to plug a record player into your pc, then you may need a usb dongle device thing liek dnick suggested, but just plugging in a stereo, for radio, tape or whatever is fine :)
hope that helps

RE: How do I connect my PC to my HiFi??
I do the same, the cable you need is called a `Y` cable, it has a headphone jack at one end and 2 phono connectors at the other end, got mine from maplins for about £2.00, also use it for my portable mini disk.
One tip is when playing back, set the volume on your PC to around 75% any lower and the output is not great quality and any higher and it is distorted.
If it is for inputting, then, if you have one, use the line in input instead of the mic input on the PC, reason is mic level is a lot lower than line level so there is a (very small) risk of damaging your sound card if the volume is to high when using the headphone socket on the hifi.
The other option, the one that I use, is to use the tape/minidisk phono outputs on the back of the hifi as this is at a fixed level so no risk of damage, and the level doesn`t change when you turn the volume up or down. Also means you can use the same cable.
All the best

RE: How do I connect my PC to my HiFi??
Thanks guys for the replies. I did mean outputting the sound to my HiFi. Fortunately had a Y cable from my cordless headphones and just tried it. Most excellent having
all them US rock stations blasting out of my HiFi intead of the piddly little speakers on my monitor. Wife not as impressed though :D. Will have to get a longer cable next week as this one is only 1 metre long though. Might give the inputting sound a go as well.
