NTL Broadband Connection Failure - Help Please?
My Father, thinks he has a virus on his PC but has run Norton AV, McAfee and another reputable program but all find nothing in the way of viruses or threats, so unless its a damn clever virus that`s unlikely to be the problem.
It occurred after a friend who had an identical problem with their PC used a library PC to email an attachment to Mother, which makes him think that it is a virus. The PC works fine except he cant get out on the 600kb broadband modem connection since this attachement was opened and NTL when they pinged him couldn`t get in either, stating that something was blocking the line, he has disabled Zone alarm Pro and Norton System works and all the other firewalls he possesses in case they were the culprit but again no luck, he`s a little peeved to say the least, just imagine a world without an internet connection....perish the thought!
I`ve suggested he tries setting up and configuring his laptop on the same 600kb Broadband modem connection to see if the problem lies with the PC or the line but if anyone has any suggestions that i could pass his way in the mean time i`m sure he`d be able to take his head from his hands and thank them!

Yeah, definitely set the modem up on the laptop to see where the problem is coming from.
Ridiculously daft question, but: has he rebooted the modem?
Occasionally I`ll boot and my connection will be unusable, rebooting the PC and modem usually gets it going.

Yeah, he`s tried that one so it looks like a swap over in due course could be best course of elimination, think he`ll need to request a set up disc from NTL though, i feel it`s going to be a long weekend for him........but not for the same reasons as me though 8)

I have had to reboot my NTL modem four or five times during the last couple of days. Make sure that you leave the power lead disconnected for 10 minutes or so before rebooting it.
I would also definitely try explicitly specifying a proxy server rather than using the default "Automatically detect settings". See my earlier posting in this thread.
Good luck
Sam.
RE: NTL Broadband Connection Failure - Help Please?
occationally my connection fails and i use the repair option in control panel - network connections- repair
this has sorted out problems when rebooting failed to correct a nonexistant connection or a really slow one
