Perhaps it needs to be burned to a DVD-r?

My DVD collection.
Sounds like they`re telling you to update the firmware on your player.
This is normally achieved by burning a CD with the relevant files - and the player reads it and updates itself automatically
Give us the website address, and also what you did exactly (what software you used to burn the CD, what you did with the CD etc.)

PS - have you read this:

HI this is what i did.
went to www.p4c.philips.com. and down loaded the file for the Philips DVDR 80.
then with a Nero burner rom, and setting it for Data. (CD.ROM iso Level2, Mode2 /XA.
no multisession.ISO 9660 and burn at the lowest which in my case is 4X
Disc-At-Once), but what i do not if it needs all the files that have downloaded,
after i have burn to disc, and put it in the computer DVD-rom drive, the disc shows the contents
on the disc, but when i put in the Philips DVDR 80 Disc Error comes up.
