DVD Shrink 3.1

Choagy (Elite) posted this on Monday, 12th January 2004, 20:15

Evenin` folks :)

The folks at DVD Shrink have exceeded their previous efforts by a long shot now. Not only is DVD Shrink 3.1a helluva` lot faster than the previous incarnations but now they have included a routine that allows you to utilise later versions of Nero (5.5 +) in the process.
Running DVD Shrink 3.1, allowing it to do its` thing and pointing it to a blank DVD-R eliminates any user errors as it simply goes about its business and writes the DVD-R.
Ripping, compressing and writing of a 7.6 Gig DVD done in about 45 minutes. Not too shabby folks :)

Download it and give it a try. Considering it`s a free utility compared to some of the dross that people post about it is well worth a go.

Thx for the heads up. I`ve been using the previous version for ages with no problems, so I never visited the site/forums to discover the new version was out!

This one looks good. Unfortunatley, no disks need backing up at the moment, but I assume it`ll all work as well as the Beta version did. :D

Mr Shrink has now announced that this will be the last version he`s writing. Rumor has it, he now works for Nero writing their ReCode software. Can`t blame him I guess! For a free bit of kit, it`s first class - but I suppose he has to eat.

It does seem to be a lot better , not too sure if I will use the burn to nero option but many others will no doubt find it very handy.

Fair enough it is an excellent freeware program and IMO is better than many other programs that have to be purchased.

Is it better then DVD2one, I know you pay for the latter but is it better?

Do they both do the entire job who do you need other tools for ripping ect.

Oscar.

It`s a lot better than DVD2One, which has a poor interface. DVD2One doesn`t rip either (as memory serves), but Shrink does the lot. Shrink`s quality is also better in later releases. Apparently Shrink also removes layer changes in this release, so that`s 30 seconds with IFO Edit saved. 3.1 must have just been released as I visited the site a few days ago and it was still showing beta 5. Off to d/l it now!

Just noticed another nice option. It`s now possible to set a default subtitle (and audio track) for display. This is very handy, especially when dealing with discs that feature subtitles for foriegn or alien languages (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars etc). Before this had to be done by creatign a pre-command in IFOEdit, which took some time, so this is a most welcome inclusion.

Yes, DVDShrink3.1x can backup my DVD very quick and fast with my AMD 2200XP processor.

However, I can only use PowerDVD or DVDShrink to play the Backup VOB files.

If I use DivX Player2.5 or Windows Media Player9 to play the Backup VOB files individually, the movie will be stopped somewhere in the middle or some of the sections inside the VOB file are skipped and cannot be played.

Also , the DivXPlayer or Windows Media Player 9 do not have sound when it play some of the Backup VOB files.

I also try to use VirtualDub to convert these Backup VOB files but VirtualDub just fail to decode the vob file with error message "pack synchronization error".

What is wrong with those Backup VOB files ? Are the Video streams comply to MPEG2 packet format and the Audio comply to AC3 standard or they are proprietary ???

????????????????
